The Peace Corps are being sued over some mental health problems. The Peace Corps have allegedly avoided hiring at least nine people because they disclosed that they had anxiety and/or depression. Two people have taken a stand and started this lawsuit, but there have been others who don’t wish to disclose their names that have spoken up as well. The two that are hosting this lawsuit claim that this violates the Rehabilitation Act. The Peace Corps are trying to retaliate by claiming that they say that they screen for mental health and disabilities before hiring. There was, however, one person who claimed they got told they got the job, but right before they got on the plane they got told they actually could not take the job as they had a mental health diagnosis.
Ellen Barry wrote this article. Barry is most known at The New York Times for covering mental health. She has worked in New England, London, New Delhi, and Moscow. With Barry’s extensive coverage of mental health, I feel like the reader(s) can trust her.
This is news to those that want to be a part of The Peace Corps, or those that know anyone that wants to be a part of The Peace Corps. Mental health struggles have been growing throughout the country. Whether you want to be a part of, or even care about, The Peace Corps, you will need to deal with mental health.
Overall I think that it is important for anyone who cares about mental health to read this. While this is a little longer of a piece, it is a critical read.
I looked at the short info about Barry at the bottom of the story. You seem to know more about her than what is included, which is good. Know your source.
