“Questions surround cause of vaping-related illnesses as local man hospitalized” Comment

September 12, 2019 · No Comments

A man in Texas went to the hospital complaining of shortness of breath, he was then hospitalized for about a week and in that time his health deteriorated. They waited until after his breathing tube was taken out for them to ask him if he vaped. “Oh yeah, I do it all the time” the man said. This is one of at least 450 cases across the nation.

This is very relevant today and effects millions of individuals around my age. There have already been 6 deaths related to ‘e-cigarettes’. The problem is increasing drastically within the past 6 months to the point where the federal government is taking action to stop the production of flavored e-cigs. There are much more prevalent issues in the US but at least the government is working on one problem at a time. My personal opinion is the point that people are doing this to themselves, not having others do it to them.

“Sioux City Man Arrested Following Indian Hills Convenience Store Robbery” Comment

September 12, 2019 · No Comments

Noah Pineda, 20, was arrested for robbing Sarg’s Mini Mart around 6pm Wednesday Night. He pointed a rifle at the clerk and demanded money. He then fled once he did and ran into a wooded area where the Woodbury County Officials released their K9 unit to apprehend him. Both the rifle and money was recovered from the place of being arrested. Further investigation is happening to see if there is any correlation between this robbery and recent other robberies in the Sioux City Area.

There has been a lot of crime around campus recently and I wanted to read a more localized news article. When I was on google news looking for a story, there was this one along with about five other robbery related crimes for the area. The article was short and gave all of the information needed like if anyone was hurt, if the evidence was found, and if he was found. I also like the part where they added the question of connection to other robberies because now im interested to want to stay updated on the story and what will come of the recent crimes.

RD1: Humans Are to Blame for the Earth’s Suffering

September 10, 2019 · No Comments

The environment has been at a rapid decrease the past two decades. Varying from pollution to climate change, humans are to blame for their own downfall.

Whether you believe in climate change or not, it is an alarming epidemic. An article from NASA.gov concluded that “more than 95 percent that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our planet.” They created a panel of 1,300 independent scientific experts from around the world to come to this conclusion.

To rule out other factors of the rising temperatures, scientists conducted research on Sun activity and energy. “If the warming were caused by a more active Sun, then scientists would expect to see warmer temperatures in all layers of the atmosphere.” From their research, the inner layers seemed to get warmer while the outer layers cooled.

Climate change is a direct effect from pollution of humans. Pollution affects not only the land and sea, but the air as well. Air pollution is most often invisible, seeming like less of a problem. An article from National Geographic said “Polluted air can be dangerous, even if the pollutants are invisible. It can make people’s eyes burn and make them have difficulty breathing. It can also increase the risk of lung cancer.”

That is just how humans are affected from air pollution. “CFCs damage the ozone layer, a region in Earth’s upper atmosphere. The ozone layer protects Earth by absorbing much of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation.” If the earth is absorbing more Sun, that means heat which is climate change.

The most recent environmental issue affecting humans now is hurricane Dorian. Humans are a contributing factor to the storm. An article from the New York Times states “Tropical storms draw their energy from ocean heat — and more than 90 percent of the heat trapped by greenhouse gas emissions is being stored in the ocean. Storms that survive the cradle of formation can intensify quickly and become immensely powerful.”

These natural disasters like forest fires, hurricanes, and the deteriorating ozone layer are a direct effect from the Carbon Footprint humans leave.

We must first see there is a problem with the environment and make a plan to stop the problem. Whether that be less fossil fuels, or more fuel efficient cars, humans have a choice to change. It isn’t asking if there is a problem, but what are we as a society going to do about it.

“Kim Kardashian Gets Tested For Lupus in New ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’ Trailer”

September 5, 2019 · No Comments

The article gives a negative title to be able to captivate the audience with the name that so many people know. It begins with an intro of saying that there will be a new season of KWTK and that a big factor will involve Kim getting tested for Lupus. So it gave an overview of what Lupus is and only gave a sliver of information from the show because the new season hasn’t aired, only a preview was.

I was drawn to this article because my mom has Lupus, but many people will know Lupus through Selena Gomez and her kidney transplant that recently happened. Personally there is always some big news right before a new season of the show because it is really good for publicity and brings viewers in.

“Another Study Warns Drinking Soda and Energy Drinks Daily May Be Deadly” Comment

September 5, 2019 · No Comments

https://www.slashgear.com/another-study-warns-drinking-soda-and-energy-drinks-daily-may-be-deadly-04589922/

After going to google news and looking to the health category, the article “Another Study Warns Drinking Soda and Energy Drinks Daily May Be Deadly” stuck out. Upon reading the article, it simply gave an overview of a study on individuals who did not have any health related conditions. The article was short and seemed to say that mortality rate increases after consuming drinks like soda and energy drinks daily. I was not given any actual evidence in the primary article, but instead had to click on a link to another article about a case study performed. This article was just written to add to the case.

As a member of the audience who drinks energy drinks almost daily, I was intrigued by this article because I related to it. I wanted to know if my health could be severely at risk if I keep drinking energy drinks. The article claimed to do a study of European adults from 10 countries. This swayed me a bit because I was not given specific ages and they were only from one part of the world; I need demographics. The article was short and explained a case study that they were expanding upon but I had to be redirected to another news article to be able to know what the specific details of the case study were about. As a reader, it seems to be a hassle to not just have at least a bit of information on one site. I felt left in the dark until I read the other article. Overall the title was compelling but the body of it should have had more research information to keep the readers involved.

“Opinion: Report on Racism, But Ditch the Labels” Comment

August 23, 2019 · No Comments

The article revolved around a tweet that President Trump had posted saying “So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” This led to the topic of reporting based on facts about what President had to say or bring racism and discrimination into the mix to create more of a controversy revolving around this widely talked about president. The article ended by stating news outlets and reporters have a choice to view his tweet as a simple political statement or cross the line of racism and bring a different public group involved.

I believe the title of this article is decent but it could be better. This article has a personal tone to it, not a reporter on the NYT. If the author wanted to gain more attention then they could have brought Trump’s name into the title just because of his controversial background. This article revolves around the presidents tweet as well so I did like the big picture of him in the beginning to make up for the under par title. The body was an easy read and short to the point which was great for someone who is just looking for a view of racism or if the media is stretching too far to find a story.

About Me

August 22, 2019 · No Comments

I am a sophomore looking to get my bachelors degree in Business Marketing and Advertising. I am part of the track and cross country team, so I’m a distance runner. That is the extent of my involvement at the college, although there is much I’m interested in trying. My free time revolves around my team and friends. I feel like I had an out with making friends my first year just because the team brought them to me. I now live in the on-campus apartments with five other girls who I’m friends with and who are on either the cross or track team.

To answer the question of why I’m taking this class, Im taking it because it seemed ideal with marketing. I want to have a career in public relations so I will be needing to crate reports and such so I feel this class will help me write to the public and not to a teacher. My interest in business began when I realized I’m not smart enough to become a zoologist, and when I took my first business class in high school. It was a class about entrepreneurship and that sparked my interest due to the freedom of creativity and the vast career choices I could take.

If Im not in class or with the team, I’m likely napping or taking a trip to McDonalds with my best friend/roommate at any and all hours of the night. I don’t do much else I do simply because I’m lazy and choose to just watch Netflix instead of doing something productive.

Interview of Tyler Carney

August 22, 2019 · No Comments

Born 19 years ago in the town of Ames, Iowa; Tyler Carney now resides at Morningside College where he excels in track and cross country; although he does have a certain love for basketball as well. Tyler chooses to major in Mass Communication and business-particularly sports management. When asked why he chose Morningside, Tyler replied “I thought the coaches were really nice and just the atmosphere of the place”.

A few fun facts to know about Tyler is that he listens to both hip hop and rap, but threw a curveball when he said he also enjoys acoustic music. He’s a big foodie that loves pasta but his favorite would have to be Alfredo. On his free time, Tyler simply hangs with his friends or is out playing basketball. He has traveled outside of the United States to go to Mexico and has his eye set on a trip to the Bahamas. To round off the interview, Tyler was asked to choose any superpower and he chose super speed. His reasoning of the choice was a little out of the box because he explained that not only would you be fast, but you could be really strong with the energy you have; and to add that you could never be caught by the cops!
