News Comment: Lebanon Women Protest

The article I read was from the News.Mic site and the title was: Lebanon women are protesting a law which allows rapists to marry their victims. The article discussed the law that basically helps rapists get out of jail if they get married to their victims. It also talks about how Morocco recently changed their law that was the same aspect.

I thought that it was a refreshing article because both of those countries are majority-Muslim so it could of been very easy to make the article about that. Even though it was short, it was full of important information and I thought it was a good story.

I know that some people may think that News.Mic is a bad place for news but I was happily surprised to read this article. The author kept it short and to the point and made sure to keep the topic towards the actual problem. The author also used a lot of quotes, which helped keep the focus on the women that were protesting and making a difference.

Explosion at Mega City Mall (condensed version)

At 9:50 am today an explosion occurred at the Mega City Mall’s food court. Two fatalities and less than 100 injuries have been reported by early responders. An investigation is currently underway and Homeland Security has been contacted.

The police have no current suspects or leads. The police chief stated that, “There is no evidence yet that it was a bomb.” The security cameras were recording during the event and will be analyzed for clues of the cause of the explosion by the police force and Homeland Security.

Mikaela Livengood, a mall cop on duty, was walking away from the food court when the explosion occurred. She reported that she saw a suspicious person place a box on a table right before she left, but has no real evidence that it caused the explosion.

The mall spokesman, Bob Dillon, reported that the mall took a lot of damage to the food court and Ikea. Mr. Dillon assures mall goers that the mall will be up and running again no later than Saturday.

She stated that she doesn’t know if the box could of had an explosive in it but that to her it was suspicious.

A witness to the aftermath of the explosion, Jared Martin a local off duty nurse, ran towards the scene to help out once he heard the explosion occur. He stated, “It was in the heat of the moment, pulling stuff out of legs.” He also reported that once he got to the scene he didn’t see anything suspicious at all, just a lot of fire and smoke.

News Comment: Wisconsin Vote Recount

In the New York Times article ‘We’re Going to Get This Done’: Wisconsin Vote Recount Is Underway, the writer discusses how the state of Wisconsin and other states like Michigan and Pennsylvania are preparing to recount the votes for the election. The process is being funded by Jill Stein because she thinks that there could be a chance that the voting machines were hacked.

The recounting of votes has happened in the past but the process has never changed the outcome of an election and it seems that it will be the same in this case according to the article. Most of the people in Wisconsin just want a recount to reassure people that the voting was fair and nothing more.

The author begins the story with a scenario of the city councilmen in Wisconsin preparing to work day and night to recount all the votes. I thought that the introduction was quite intriguing and was very successful in getting people to read the article, but that was probably the most exciting thing about the article.

I feel like this topic is a hard topic to write about because most of the public would agree that the whole process is pointless. The author started out very good but lost my attention by the end. I felt like the article just kept dragging on and was a lot longer than it needed to be.

The article was well written and was probably interesting to an older audience but I failed to see the point in it. I guess we will all find out once the votes are all hand counted.
