College is back in session and staying true to form there have already been a few incidents with alcohol being consumed by underage students. There has been some action taken on discipline for those underage caught with alcohol. One rule that has already been put in place this year is that if you are written up by the Resident Assistants, (RA’s), and you live on campus you must pack up your things and find some other place to live.
The RA of Waitt Apartments, Megan Davidson, said that the only way you can have alcohol in your room is if you are 21. If anyone in the room is not 21 it becomes a dry room, meaning that no alcohol is allowed. Davidson also mentions that if you are 21 and you live in apartment but others in the apartment are not 21 you can go into your room but the door must be shut.
When asking about the drinking issue on campus a Morningside sophomore said that, “people aren’t being responsible and it is disrespectful to those on campus who choose not to drink.” States around the country have contemplated the idea of lowering the drinking age because they think it will cause less drinking from those who are underage now. The student responded to this idea saying it’s a bad idea, more students will drink than usual. “The first couple times people underage drink is to be rebellious, and the main reason for drinking is to be initiated, to become social, and accepted by a group.”

Just wondering what other kinds of drinking issues their are on campus. I have heard rumors that even ppl that are of age are drinking and coming to some activities sponsored by the college drunk. How does the college deal with these situations?

I like that it was to the point. I think that you could add an interview with one of the area coordinators or the dorms. I think that might add a different dimension to your article. Nice work!

You need focus, Kacie. Stick with residence hall rules. What are they and how are students treated differently. There has to be some confusion when you have 21-year-olds living with younger students.
What sort of pressure does this put on RAs?
You need to speak to someone in residence life. Pflipsen or Hineman, I would think.
