Florida State out of Playoffs, even with ACC conference win & Undefeated Season
Yes, you read that correctly. This weekend the College football playoff committee decided Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama were the top 4 teams in the country, therefore they are in for the playoffs. This comes as a surprise as Florida State had a historic season and has a better record than both Alabama and Texas. In almost every other season winning your conference gives you the best shot at getting a bid to the playoffs, an undefeated conference win almost always guarantee your spot in the final four.
The committee explained that they believe that Florida State isn’t the same team as they wore from week 11, they are not entirely wrong in that statement. Florida State star QB Jordan Travis suffered a broken leg in the week 11 matchup, therefore the committee ruled them not a top 4 team. Even with the star QB going down, Florida State went on to win their next game and then on to flinch the ACC conference.
I talked with Morningside Alum Drew Bessey about his thoughts on the situation. Bessey was furious with the decision to leave Florida State out of the playoffs, he says “an undefeated power 5 team has to make the playoffs, period.” Bessey went on to talk about how Alabama shouldn’t have the 4 seed, he says, “Alabama lost to Texas, snuck by Arkansa and got save by a hail-mary to beat Auburn. Those close loses should tell the committee that Florida State deserves the 4 seed.”
