NBA Referee Tony Brown Dies of Cancer at 55 (comparing print and video)

The print version of this story talked about Tony Brown’s history. They talked about his college life all the way up until his death. The video version was straight to the point. The video said the news that he died and gave some brief stats on his NBA reffing career.

The print version took a few minutes to read all the way through. The video was 35 seconds long.

The print version had quotes from his family and friends about Brown. The only source that the video had was “per sources.” Neither print nor video had any specific attributions listed.

Surprisingly, the video had no sound it cycled through around 5-6 pictures of Brown reffing NBA games. The print version only has 2 pictures at the top of the article. You also have to click an arrow to see the second image.

Overall, the print and video versions show the article in very different ways. The print version takes the time to talk about Brown’s life whereas the video only focuses on his NBA reffing career. The video’s purpose was to give the viewer all of the information as quickly as possible and the print version was for people who wanted to know who Tony Brown was as a person.

science broadcast story Can Technology Help Predict Suicide?

Scientists are trying to use machine learning to help detect when a person may be at a high risk of suicide. According to a New York Times article, the process would work by “a Fitbit programmed to track \ sleep and physical activity. On [the person’s] smartphone, an app collects data about [their] moods, movement, and social interactions.” The data would then be sent over to a team of researchers and see if the patient is at risk.

Matthew K. Nock, a Harvard Physiologist, said that this process could work by “The sensor reports that a patient’s sleep is disturbed, she reports a low mood on questionnaires and GPS shows she is not leaving the house. But an accelerometer on her phone shows that she is moving around a lot, suggesting agitation. The algorithm flags the patient. A ping sounds on a dashboard. And, at just the right time, a clinician reaches out with a phone call or a message.”

There are a lot of issues that may come with this. Algorithms are never 100% accurate. There could be false positives or, more dangerous, false negatives. This could lead to patients getting pinged when not needed or patients at risk of not getting the help they need.

When Dr. Nock was asked about these potential hazards, he said “With all due respect to people who’ve been doing this work for decades, for a century, we haven’t learned a great deal about how to identify people at risk and how to intervene.” He also said “The suicide rate now is the same as it was literally 100 years ago. So just if we’re being honest, we’re not getting better.”

Many people like Dr. Karen L. Swartz, a professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University are worried about a “gray zone” that may also come into play. She had a patient who had admitted to suicidal thoughts but refused to be hospitalized. Dr Swartz was worried that she may have been fired if she forced her into a hospital, so decided to send her home and monitor instead.

When reflecting on this experience, she said “It was one of those things where I just genuinely hoped I was right. With experience, it only becomes clearer that suicidal thoughts can come and go without warning.” Swartz also stated “We are asked to predict something that is highly unpredictable,”

Although machine learning is something that is a growing trend. People may have to consider the risks that come with it, especially when using it with something as sensitive as suicide.

New Comment 7 NFL Player Gets Charged with Misdemeanor Assault After Shoving Cameraman.

After their loss on October 10th, Raiders Wide Receiver Devante Adams shoved a cameraman on his way to the locker room. This event was caught on cameras on national TV. After the incident, Adams quickly apologized during a post-game interview.

According to the ESPN article, Adams said the shove, “was just frustration mixed with [Zebley] literally just running in front of me.”

While punishment from the NFL will be on hold, Adams could potentially have legal consequences. According to ESPN, Ryan Zebley, the cameraman shoved by Adams, “suffered whiplash, a headache, and a possible minor concussion from the incident…” Zebley filed charges for assault the following Wednesday.

Adams will have court on November 10th. If convicted, he could face up to 6 months in prison or a $1,000 fine.

While most of this article had good sources, there should have been quotes from Zebley. No one knows how he felt about the incident or what he plans of seeing out of these charges. Besides this, the article provides good evidence from the Head coach and Adams.

This news could have some impact on Raiders fans. Adams is their top receiver and having him miss games would give them one less weapon. It also has impact on the league because typically, players wouldn’t have legal punishment from actions like this while they are playing.

Morningside Track and Field Athletes Excited for New Coach. (DRAFT)

Three Morningside track and field athletes were interviewed about their opinion on the team’s new coach Frank Wallace.

According to Morningside’s Bio, Wallace was a sprinter at Briar Cliff. His most recent job was as an assistant coach at Wayland Baptist University. Wallace is also a six-time USTFCCCA NAIA South Region Assistant Coach of the Year. This will be Wallace’s first head coaching job.

Morningside has had some of the lowest rankings to date on the USTFCCCA Polls and Rankings with men’s outdoor being ranked 122 and women’s outdoor ranked 69 in their most recent rankings. Wallace plans on quickly changing the team dynamic. During the preseason, Wallace has already pushed his athletes hard and has high expectations for them.

Jumper Tyson Spradling believes that coach Wallace will “Push [the track and field team] harder than we’ve been pushed before.”
Tyson plans to use this training to help him jump over the 6’6” mark for the high jump. Based on last year’s results, this height will push Spradling into the top 10 for the high jump in the GPAC and a few inches off of hitting the A-standard for nationals.
Tyson loves the track and field environment during meet days and is “excited to watch people run.” He also plans on having some leadership and “push people to be better at their events.”

When asked how he felt about the track team, Tyson’s eyes lit up as he talked about how much fun he has with the team. He stated that “those are my boys.”
Jared Nicholas, a sprinter on the team, believes Wallace will bring a lot of new changes to the track team. He stated that Wallace “has a lot of ideas and can change the track dynamic.”

While Nicholas is excited to compete again after the long season, he also talked about how he was excited for the little things such as “the long bus rides and memories that come with it.

Nicholas has a strong bond with many of the athletes on the track team. He said, “I love these guys, they can put a smile right on your face.”
While Nicholas has high expectations for himself competitively, he said that in the end “I want to make the most out of the little time I have left here.”

Ashton Banker is very optimistic about where the team is heading saying, “I think we are going to do a lot of big things this year.”

Banker is also excited to see the new mentality that the track team develops. He eagerly said, “I think it’ll be fun.”

While Banker wants to make it to nationals this year, he ultimately wants to have a new personal record in the 400. Banker would have to beat 50.79 seconds to beat his best mark. Banker would have to run under 48.26 seconds to hit the A-standard in nationals.
All the athletes seem excited to have coach Wallace as their new coach and believe that he will make Morningside’s track program a lot more competitive. The track season will be exciting to see.

News comment 6 Shaquille O’Neal Discusses Desire to Buy an NBA team

According to a CNN article, O’Neal told a reporter ‘I would like to go back home. I’ll leave that to the viewers to figure out [what it means]. I would like to go back home.” This was referencing a recent rumor about O’Neal wanting to buy the Phoenix Suns.

The CNN article discussed what “home” could possibly mean for Shaq. They predicted that teams that Shaq could consider home were the Spurs, Lakers, Magic, and Pelicans.

Other players like Lebron James have had an interest in buying teams after their NBA careers. James has discussed the possibility of starting a new franchise in Los Vegas. These players would not be the first to own an NBA team. Hall of Famer Michael Jordan is the Majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets. Other NBA players such as Yao Ming and even James and O’Neal have partial ownership in some professional sports teams.

This is news because it is showing a growing trend of professional sports players buying teams. It also shows how professional athletes are seeing the sports world as a business. The article has good quotes and is credible since they got the quote during a CNN interview.

Andy Nelson Interview

Pastor Andy Nelson was interviewed about his journey to joining Morningside University as a Chaplain.

Nelson was born in Redwing Minnesota. Both of his parents were teachers.

Nelson Came to Morningside to join his wife, who is a professor here.

Pastor Nelson stated that his job here at Morningside is to “tend to the spiritual life of Morningside Students.”

He helps connect students to different groups around the community and helps students “connect to something bigger than themselves.”

Pastor Nelson helps guide spiritual groups on campus. He also helps talk with students who are struggling with their faith. Nelson offers 100% confidentiality when students come in to talk.

Nelson holds a variety of events on campus such as Student Faith Stories and Midweek Mindfulness.

Nelson would love to see the community be more involved in these events. Although he doesn’t want any of the events to be required, he wants to see everyone come together and take the time to talk with each other about their journeys through faith.

Nelson always had a strong presence in the church. He would often lead in readings and was an active participant. After Nelson had some people in his church say that he would make a good Pastor, his interest was sparked and Nelson began pursuing his journey.

Nelson was involved in campus ministry as a college student but always “went back and forth growing up” on whether being a pastor was his true calling.

He recalled a time during his Freshman year in college when he called his parents and said “I want to be a Pastor.”

Due to the 9/11 attacks and other events going on during his Junior year, Nelson began battling whether being a Pastor was the best path for him. Finally, during his Senior year of college, Nelson decided that becoming a pastor was what Nelson truly wanted to do.

When asked what Pastor Nelson would tell his college self, he stated that he should have taken a gap year to “Take advantage of that time to step away and get that experience.”

Nelson regrets not taking a gap year because he felt burnt out. He felt like a break would have allowed him to “disengage from student life” and have a fresh start.

Nelson hopes to help plant seeds in students to help them grow here on campus.

Celtics Head Coach Ime Udoka faces season-long suspension after having a relationship with staff member

Celtics Head Coach Ime Udoka was suspended earlier this week after it was discovered that Udoka had been having relations with another staff member on the team.

ESPN states, “The relationship is considered a violation of the organization’s guidelines…” It is not heard of to have this long of a suspension for a NBA head coach in this situation.

Udoka joined the Celtics last summer and led them all the way to the NBA Finals. He is only one of five head coaches to do this in the past 25 years.

Joe Mazzulla will become the interim head coach for the season.

ESPN’s article has a good lead. It is straight to the point and gets the most important information across. This is news because it once again shows that leagues like the NBA are taking situations like these very seriously. Even coaches who lead their team to a championship aren’t safe.
