Not everyone is cut out to be a teacher, but as Jill Gleason stated, “Some people are just born to teach.”
Jill Gleason was the oldest of 4. She grew up in a trailer home with a stay at home mom and dad who was in the military. Neither of her parents went to college, but she was going to be the first. Jill always had a passion for teaching and she wasn’t going to let anything get in her way, even though a lot of things could have.
Jill always planned on being a teacher growing up. “I played school sometimes with my three little sisters,” she stated “I was always the teacher.” She also said, “ I’ve always felt I would have been a teacher whether I went to college or not.”
Jill didn’t grow up in a wealthy family, so she had to pay for her college all on her own. This involved working at a variety of jobs including Pizza Hut, Walmart, and her local grocery store.
Her college life wasn’t a joy either. She had to deal with nightmarish roommates and at some points didn’t even have an actual dorm room. This alone would make a lot of people ready to drop out, but Jill overcame and got her teaching degree.
When interviewing Jill’s mom, who also taught despite not going to college, she stated “I have always been so proud of her. She has worked extremely hard ever since she got that first teaching job and she deserves all the success she has had with it.”
Her start to teaching was a non traditional one, but one she would not change. “I started as a substitute teacher,” Jill stated. “Unfortunately the teacher became ill, and I had to become a long term substitute teacher for the remainder of the year.” Although it was a tough class to handle, Jill pushed through and finished the year. After this, the principal was impressed with her work and offered her a third grade teaching position. She immediately took this position and never looked back. Jill has been teaching at the same school for 26 years. She has loved the school and the environment each and every year.
When talking to the principal at the school, he stated “Jill is an extremely smart and talented person. I am extremely proud of her performance and grateful to have her on this staff.
When asked what her favorite moment was, Jill said “The best moments in teaching are when the kids “get it” When you see their eyes puff out, their chest puff out, and their excitement in learning. That’s the best.”
A few years ago, Jill decided it was time for a change. She transitioned from a teacher into a coach. “I took a position as a gifted and talented teacher,” Jill said. “After that point, I felt like I wouldn’t be able to go into a traditional classroom again, so I decided to make a career change and become a coach.” Jill loved being able to still work with kids but did not have the large workload of grading homework, talking to parents, and making large lesson plans. “I get to learn programs like excel and a lot of other fun programs for education,” Jill stated. “I learned that at this stage of my career I love the digital side of education.” Some of her tasks include making spreadsheets, asigning kids to classes at the beginning of the year, and working with students test scores for certain placements. She has loved her new job and wants to be a coach for as long as she can.
