Transition: In todays world tons of college students are considering if college is even worth it?

College expenses have gone up by more than $5,000 since 2007, adjusting for inflation, resulting in a doubling of the average Federal student loan balance.

Despite the financial challenges of pursuing a degree, recent studies show that, for many Americans, the investment is valuable.

Quote

College graduates typically earn higher incomes, and the income difference between those with a college degree and those with only a high school education is growing,

The benefits of a college degree, on average, exceed the costs, with graduates earning about $1.2 million more over their lifetime.

Despite rising college costs, the evidence indicates that, in most cases, a college degree opens up better financial opportunities.

Quote 2

So for all my college students out there listening just know based on your investment college is worth it.

Trump Is Still Far Ahead in Iowa Poll, With Haley Matching DeSantis for 2nd

In the recent Des Moines Register poll, it was revealed that former President Donald J. Trump remains the frontrunner in Iowa, securing 43 percent support from potential participants in the state’s Republican caucuses. Meanwhile, Nikki Haley has made significant gains, catching up to tie with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for second place, both garnering 16 percent support. Notably, Haley’s support has surged by 10 points, while DeSantis has experienced a decline of three points compared to the earlier August poll. The survey, helmed by J. Ann Selzer, carried a margin of error of about 4.9 percentage points. Following behind are other contenders such as Senator Tim Scott, entrepreneurs Vivek Ramaswamy, former Governor Chris Christie, and Governor Doug Burgum, each receiving support ranging from 3 to 7 percent. Former Vice President Mike Pence, who recently withdrew from the race, obtained 2 percent support, down from 6 percent in August.

This article is news because it affects everyone who is in Iowa and the average voter because the Iowa Caucus.  The structure was very similar to other New York Times post, there was lots of important information at the top and at the bottom was each candidate and a little of what they are doing recently.

$23,500 in Coins to Pay a Settlement? Judge Says Keep the Change and Try Again.

The article discusses a Colorado judge’s ruling against a welding company, JMF Enterprises LLC, which attempted to pay a settlement in the form of $23,500 worth of loose coins, weighing over 6,500 pounds. The judge deemed the act malicious and in bad faith, ordering the company to pay using conventional methods. The company’s attempt at a nighttime delivery of the coins was rejected, as it was physically impossible to handle the massive load. JMF Enterprises argued that coins were legal tender, but the judge highlighted the practical difficulties and costs associated with processing such a payment. The judge ordered the company to pay additional fees for the extended case and the handling of the coin payment. The article also mentions a similar incident in Georgia where a business owner paid an employee’s wages with 91,500 greasy pennies, resulting in a legal dispute.

I found this article fun and entertaining to read.  This article in my opinion is not considered news.  This article, in my opinion, was written to get the readers to click on the story so the New York Times can get sell ad spots.  The structure of the article worked for me, It felt like a smooth read and I have no problems with the way the information was laid out

4 takeaways from the historic ousting of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy was vacated from his duties as Speaker.

Kevin McCarthy’s short run as Speaker of the House was cut short. After the last bill past by the House to stop the government from shutting down, a small group of Republicans wanted to start the vacating process to get McCarthy out of his Speaker roll.

With the new Vacate process going to a vote, and some Republicans against McCarthy, the vote to outs McCarthy were 216-210. This was a historic vote because it was the first time in our countries history a vote has removed a speaker.

The Republican party has no official replacement for McCarthy, but some names have been thrown around like Tom Emmer and Steve Scalise.

Democrats have not come to McCarthy’s rescue and voted to oust him. They now intend to nominate Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker.

While all this goes on in the House, all the proceedings will grind to a halt. Patrick McHenry is now serving as the “speaker pro tempore” until there is a new speaker voted in.

This article is definitely news because it is the first time our speaker was voted out and with this part of the government is coming to a halt. I liked that NPR had a non biased look on this situation, they just presented the facts and let the reader think of it as they think of it. The structure was also nice it was separated into 4 parts based on what you are trying to learn. The article also had a multiple links throughout the article to help the reader with information they don’t understand or know about, if this subject wasn’t covered in my government class I definetly could have gotten lost in the reading.

How can College Students Save Money (Final Draft)

With the average price of everything going up, how can college students save money and what are some daily hacks they can use to save.

In a perfect world, everyone would have enough money to pay for anything they deem necessary, but that is not true in the real world. The average college student isn’t independently wealthy, many of them are running on tight budgets that involve tuition fees, textbooks, rent, daily expenses, and entertainment.  With a balance of all of those it is easy to see why many students have a financial problems.  this article is going to look at some tips and tricks to help students save money and even some life hacks students here at Morningside have used to save.

I interviewed three college students: Jarrrod Nafzinger from Morningside University, Mike Granstom from South Dakota State University, and Noah Bertsch from Northwestern College. I asked them on ways they have saved and gotten money though out their college career.

Jarrod said, “Having a part time job that you can do in your dorm is amazing, plus I don’t have to leave my dorm.”  Jarrod works payroll for a company, so he works 2 nights a week and makes a decent amount of money off it.  Jarrod also talked about not eating out and utilizing the café, but one thing that Jarrod made very clear is “Not going home is an easy way to save money,” he said, “With the cost of gas I can just save money by not going home.”

Mike Granstom said “Everything is expensive these days, even Walmart, so when I come home for the weekend I go to Aldi and buy hella snacks.”  Mike also talked about using student discounts on subscription services.  Mike said “I use the student discount on Apple music, Disney +, and Hulu.”

Noah talked about how much money he loses when it comes to books, food, entertainment, and even his girlfriend.  Noah’s advice was to “Find work in the summer and coast by with the earnings throughout the year.”  We spent a lot of time talking about how expensive it is to go out to the bars, so finding bars that have specialty nights or your local cheap bar is another way to save money on entertainment.

After talking with these college students I then did some of my own research and found many ways that college students can gain and save money. The first step to saving money is to know how much money you have entering and leaving their wallets.  Creating a budget can outline your income and expenses, so you can track your spending and identify areas where you can cut back.  Husson University suggest that everyone that struggles with a budget to get a Budgeting app.  There are many of them out there and they can help you manage your finances.

Every college student knows the pain of ordering their books every semester.  Buying used or renting textbooks can save you money.  You can find lots of deals on books through online stores or by sharing books with classmates.

Eating out can drain your wallet very quickly, learning how to cook simple and affordable meals can help you save tons of money instead of eating out. The Cafe is also an amazing way to save money.  Everyone should have a meal plan and should take advantage of it.

As college student you are bound to find things to do in your free time and many of these forms of entertainment are expensive.  Even the cost of going out on the weekends to the bars our house party for a good time adds up.  Saving money on entertainment is as simple as using a steaming service instead of going to the movies, not buying a whole bunch of alcohol on the weekends, even as simple as not buying the new Xbox game right when it comes out.  There are many things you can do that do not cost you money like school held events, hiking, and reading books from the library.

The Journalism World is Changing

Thomas Ritchie has spent many years in the Journalism world and says “It’s not dead it still exists now it’s just a different animal.”

Thomas Ritchie works in corporate marketing which he says, “it’s not sexy by any means”.  As successful as Ritchie is as a marketer his heart and skills will always be in journalism.

Ritchie started his career at Mount Marty college, now University, with a degree in communications.   From there he went to the adventurous world of Journalism and started working for different papers for the next 20 years.

The largest Paper that Ritchie worked for was the Argus Leader, and that’s when he started talking about the changes in journalism.   Ritchie said that that there were 72 people working for the Argus Leader when he worked there now it’s less than 10.

Ritchie talked about how there was not a lot of support for the paper news industry, lots of people get their news from short form content and social media platforms.  He explained that the people today are not interested or have the time to read a whole story, the people just want the main details in a quick fashion and carry on with their lives.  This is especially true when it comes to the new state of twitter, where anyone can really post anything without repercussion.

Another way that journalism has changed is the amount of opinion pieces that are published.  Ritchie talked about how lots of news today are opinion-based shows, articles, or podcasts that drive a narrative that aren’t always unbiased.

Lastly the Journalism world has to deal with this new form of Ai.  Ai is something that can be used by everyone now and is very easy to access.  Ritchie said, “Ai will take the jobs of people who don’t know how to use it”.

The majority journalist themselves have found themselves outside the journalism world.  Many of them like Ritchie have found their way to the marketing world.  Ritchie said that journalism is similar to marketing when it comes to getting people’s attention and creative writing.

Ritchie told us lots about the “glory days” where journalism was at its peak.  He said it was exciting and “it’s never the same 2 days in a row”.  His favorite memory was a quote a person said after turning 100 saying “smoke cigars and have a lot of sex”.

Vivek Ramaswamy Is Attacked Over China, Ukraine and TikTok

Vivek Ramaswamy was a standout in the last Republican debate, but the second this Wednesday was a different story.  Vivek Ramaswamy was taken more seriously the second debate was attacked by everyone especially Mike Pence.

Many of the other candidates attacked Ramaswamy’s business dealings with China, his foreign policies, and even his presence on TikTok.  “Honestly, every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber,” Nikki. Haley said, criticizing his use of TikTok.

Vivek was even under attack by Tim Scott saying, “We think about the fact that Vivek said we are all good people, and I appreciate that, because at the last debate he said we were all bought and paid for,” Vivek has already been called out for changing opinions and lies and the other candidates are not letting him off the hook.

Lastly Mike Pence really attacked Vivek during this debate saying, “Let me say, I’m glad Vivek pulled out of his business deal in 2018 in China, that must’ve been around the time you decided to start voting in presidential elections.”  Pence really wanted to enforce that Vivek is to young, naïve, and hasn’t really had any political experience, that included voting.

This is news for everyone that is interested in politics.  It shows the change in the Republican candidates because Vivek was considered a winner of the last debate now since he is being more attacked, he is struggling to roll with the punches.

This article was very structured very well and unlike most New York Times articles it doesn’t have to much unneeded information at the bottom.  It was structed in a way where you could see all the candidates and what they said about Vivek.

I would say that the one thing missing in this article is Ramaswamy’s responses.  This article focuses on all the attacks that Vivek took but nothing about his defense, because on some of these quotes he had adequate rebuttals to what was said against him.
