Elvis “Religion”

November 17, 2011 by · 2 Comments

People going on a pilgrimage for the religion based on Elvis and his music is very odd.  It’s hard for many to view this as a religion.  In all reality it has all the needs of how people define religion.  People can view his music as being the myths and as is basically the foundation of the religion.  There are tons of rituals that people perform while at Graceland for his death week.  Part of the moral code while at Graceland people aren’t allowed in the room where Elvis died.  There are many material possessions that were once Elvis’ are now sacred to the people who follow the religion.  As much as people would like to not think of this as a religion it is hard to deny that it is not.  The main components of religion are expressed.  I personally would not like to think of the Elvis Religion as being an actual religion but the facts say otherwise.

    Wayne,
I agree with you that it is hard to imagine this as being a religion. The facts that we have discussed in class do say otherwise but I feel like we may have missed the key components that actually make it a religion. I agree that his music/lyrics are kind of like the foundation of the religion. It is almost like the text for the people to follow or even the myths to live life by. It is extremely odd that following Elvis can be considered a religion but thus far we cannot determine it to be otherwise.

I always thought that pagans were people who did not accept the churches teachings and spoke out against the teachings of the church. I kind of think of them as an enemy of the church and people who are trying to destroy christianity.
