13 Year Old Celeb Graduates High School

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/11/nolan-gould-modern-family_n_1959005.html

“Modern Family” actor, Nolan Gould, recently graduated from high school…. at thirteen. On the show “Modern Family” Gould plays Luke who is supposed to have a lower IQ. In real life, his IQ is at 150.

I think this is newsworthy because Gould is apart of a very successful show on television. I know many people that love the show “Modern Family” and would be impressed by this article.

The Olympic “Fab 5”: How they Changed Gymnastics

When July 27th, 2012 rolled around, we all knew that the 30th Summer Olympics would captivate the world. Going in with high hopes, Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Ali Raisman, Mckayla Maroney, and Kyla Ross were expected to do great. And they did just that. I know when I was watching the “Fab 5” perform I would get chills every time because they all were amazing.

Leslie Pfeifer, a sophomore here at Morningside College, was a gymnast until the age of fifteen. She said that the “Fab 5 were awesome. It was just so cool that they were so young and so successful.” She recalls from when she was a gymnast that to be as successful as them is extremely difficult. “It’s crazy how they are so focused for so many years on one thing just to say that they are an Olympian.”

Gabby Douglas in particular, I believe, has changed the face of gymnastics for forever. She was the first African American gymnast to win the All-Around title, which is obviously a huge accomplishment. She has shown that color doesn’t matter when it comes to the Olympic games. Pfeifer says, “It is crazy that she won at just sixteen. I was really impressed and happy for her.”

When speaking with Pfeifer, the topic of Jordyn Weiber and her meltdown was brought up. In the finals to get into the All-Around finals Weiber was beaten by Ali Raisman to take the number two spot to compete. At the end of the night, Weiber was hysterically crying and being very standoffish. “I expected it just because of her age, (17). She should have kept herself under control. It kind of made me think that she was trying to get media attention,” Pfiefer says.

Two Gators Found with Tails and Head Gone

http://www.nbc-2.com/story/19728585/four-gator-carcasses-found-in-two-days

In Cape Coral, Fl on October 3rd, two alligators were found dead in a canal by a student walking home from his bus stop. Oddly though they both had no heads or tails attached. Earlier in the week in the same area two smaller gators were found dead as well.

This is newsworthy because it’s not everyday that there are two gators with there heads and tails cut off and a few days before two more were found dead. It is a reminder to the people of Florida and the whole United States that you must have a license to hunt for alligators. If you don’t then you can be fined with a felony.

Florida sends election departments list of 198 potential noncitizens; some may have illegally voted

This article is about how there may have been people who were not eligible to vote still got to vote. Recently officials figured out that thousands, mostly from the Miami-Dade County, have been voting illegally. Many of these people didn’t know that they were voting illegally. The article caught my eye because I’m from Florida and I’m interested as to what goes on with the politics down there.

This is newsworthy because it pertains to the people of Florida and it holds concern that people who should not be voting are.

What’s Your Favorite Movie?

Preston Nibaur, a junior here at Morningside College, was asked today what his favorite movie was. When I approached him he was sitting in the Olsen Student Center using his computer. He looked at me with a confused look on his face and surprised that someone was approaching him. When I asked what his favorite movie was he laughed and said, “Seriously?” Obviously I was being serious so I laughed along and told him that yes, I was being serious. It took him a minute or two to come up with his favorite movie but once he thought of it he laughed a little and huge smile came across his face. “I would have to say 21 Jumpstreet,” he said while lightly laughing. I laughed and said, “That’s an awesome movie!” He nodded in agreement and then continued to say, “I may of watched it four times in five days with my roommates,” saying it sarcastically. I looked at him with a “are you serious?” look and he laughed. He continued to say that everyday they watched the movie different people would come by and watch along with them. You could say he lived in the popular room for those five days.

“21 Jumpstreet” stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as undercover cops and go back to high school. They are trying to uncover who is the drug dealer in the area selling to the high school students. It is a hilarious movie and I recommend you to see it.

Bra Bandit

For this “newsworthy” article I looked at my hometown’s newspaper. I went through the list and this one caught my eye because I thought for sure that this couldn’t be newsworthy. I was right.

More than forty bras were stolen from a local Victoria’s Secret. A worker told deputies that on September 17 she walked by a display and noticed a display of bras and that four of the drawers were empty. She asked another coworker if she saw the bras and she said that they were there fifteen minutes earlier. Each bra were $45.

Now, I believe this could be newsworthy if they caught whoever did this crime on camera or the person was arrested but this was the only information they gave us. It really does not effect anyone except the other local Victoria’s Secret but all they have to do is just call each of the stores and warn them.

Grandview Park (final)

Since I was a little kid, during the summer I would always be at Grand View Park. I would go there with my brother and my cousins and we would play baseball and all other sports. Also, every year we would go to Saturday in the Park and it would just be radiating with energy and excitement.

Right now, it is 2012, in early September, on a Sunday, mid-morning. I walk across the street from my aunts’ house to get to the park. It’s the most perfect weather that I have experienced in a long time. It’s not too hot or too cold, it’s just right. As I lay in the grass there is a light breeze passing by and oh my does it feel magnificent. When I experience weather like this, for me at least, it always puts me into the best mood. It makes me feel like everything in the world is going right and how could there ever be hate or anything with this kind of weather.

As I’m laying here I hear someone mowing the grass down the road. In the distance you can hear a train blowing its whistle. I can also here the trees sway in the wind.  I am sitting close to a road that is going through the park and only a few cars have passed by. One had extremely loud music playing and it ruined the peace for just a few moments. Just now I heard a fire truck and that lasted for a good five minutes.

I expected more people to be here on a perfect day like this but there wasn’t. I have only seen one lady and she was running but was interrupted because someone called her. Lets just say she didn’t seem too happy talking to that person. When I looked behind me, I saw a squirrel nibbling on an acorn. The grass is dead for the most part due to the drought. Usually though the grass is a perfect grass green and so soft. I have looked behind me a few times and a few of those times the same car, a maroon Cadillac, keeps passing by which is pretty creepy. Oh, now I have seen two people, a kid who could of easily been seventeen in high top light gray converse with a red ball cap on, a crème colored shirt, and forest green shorts just passed by me and waved. I thought that was pretty nice.

The tree that I chose to sit under provided the most shade. If you see it you can tell that it is in older tree. The branches go out far so there is plenty of shade.

The Park Commission back in 1904 established Grandview Park. It was originally prairie land so when it was established they planted over 2,000 trees. Many of those trees are still in tacked today. That means they are over one hundred years old. It’s crazy to think of what these trees have been through and to think if they could talk, wow. The park is also the second highest peak in Woodbury County. Grandview Park is a historical place in Sioux City because it has been around for so long. It is a great place to get away and relax.

Problems with my Writing

The problems that I believe that I have with my writing is that sometimes I don’t have a clear point of view and I also veer off track. I also think that I try to write in my own voice too much so that messes up my writing as well. I need to work on making a beginning for my paper too. I sometimes add too many details to my writing and it just becomes clustered and unorganized. I can be inclusive when it comes to my writing also.

Hidden Tricks with Key Fobs

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/05/your-key-remote-can-also-roll-down-your-windows_n_1857673.html

On the Huffington Post I stumbled across this article that seemed pretty interesting. The headline was “Bet You Didn’t Know Your Car Keys Could Do This.” So I clicked on it and right off the bat there is a highlighted section saying “The remotes can often lower a car’s window, allowing owners to start airing out the car before hopping inside.” I thought that was quite clever especially if you live in Florida and it is hot pretty much all year long. I do believe this is news worthy because for anyone it could be a little trick to help make their day maybe a little bit better.
