The lead of this story is very well written, it give enough information along with the headline to know what’s going on at the world chess championships. It describes the details that led to the match that ultimately Magnus Carlsen the world chess championship.

The news values this falls under are relevancy due to how recent the championships were. It’s also relevant to us because Carlsen’s opponent was an American at the world championships playing Magnus.

Another news value this falls under is the value of is the value of this being a interesting and unique story. Not many think of the chess championships as being very popular and therefore makes it a pretty unique story.

It is a nice tight lead that gives readers everything they need.

The NYT probably covers chess better than it does “traditional” sports. Chess fits better the NYT readership, I imagine.
