Honors Reflection

My opinions on beauty have slightly changed, but overall, these readings and our discussions have strengthened my main opinion.  Everybody has a different sense of beauty.  We all find beauty in different people and different objects.  Yes, sometimes our views on beauty are influenced by our social world, but when we look past that, we all find beauty in different areas.  For example, many guys may find one girl very attractive (or vise versa).  Then they all get to know the girl’s personality and interests.  Most likely, not all the guys will find these attributes beautiful.  This is because we all see beauty differently.

Our first two readings and discussions dealt a lot with each other.  They focused mainly on physical beauty and attractiveness.  We dealt a lot with social media’s influence and the influence of artificial beauty.  The last reading we did was about natural beauty and beauty away from  just humans.  We talked about finding beauty in the natural world and also looking at the sources of that beauty.

I think the fact that our society has created a false beauty image has been talked to death in our discussions.  I would like to look more into natural beauty and its effect on people.  For me, natural beauty is way more beautiful than the image created by our society.  Yeah, I am sometimes attracted to that false image, but it is only for a moment.  When I see amazing natural beauty, it takes my breath away, and it captivates my mind for more than just a few moments.  In fact, if I relate this to physical attractiveness, I would much rather have a girlfriend that wears very little to no makeup and lets their natural beauty shine than one that cakes it on just to look like the so called “beautiful” in our society’s terms.

These articles mainly focus purely on beauty, but you could relate them to other things like “humor.”  We talked a lot about how it isn’t good that we create artificial beauty for various reasons.  We create false fronts all the time to impress the outside world.  This is no different than creating fake beauty.  We need to not create false beauty or fronts or whatever.  It is important to be ourselves.  People will find the beauty in the real you, and if you don’t let the real you shine, your true beauty will never show.

I completely agree these last few weeks have definitely changed my opinion on beauty also. I also think that through all of these readings we come to the same conclusion that beauty is decided differently by everyone. I agree with your summary of all the articles and how they relate to one another.

I agree with the last sentence of your post and I think that idea needs to be central to what we get out of this class, and we need to be able to express this idea to other people as well.
