South Africans are rejoicing in their country’s second consecutive World Cup victory, which has produced racial togetherness that even Hollywood couldn’t create and provided an escape from the country’s problems.

The towering hall thundered with the euphoria of a nation where everyone seemed, for the moment, to have left their differences behind.

The celebrants spoke Zulu, Sotho, Tswana, Afrikaans and English. They were Black and white, young and old, mining company managers and restaurant waitresses.

They sang and danced together to songs blasting from speakers. They waved South African flags. They wore the same green-and-gold attire of their rugby heroes as they gathered at the Oliver Reginald Tambo airport in Johannesburg on Tuesday to welcome the team home from the championship game in France. A bronze statue of Tambo with a hand aloft stood among the jubilation, as if bestowing his blessing upon a scene made possible by the work he did to topple apartheid.

South Africa became the winningest country in the Rugby World Cup’s relatively brief history last week, claiming its second consecutive crown and fourth overall. This nation of 60 million has been going wild ever since.

“Unity,” is how Maureen Mampuru, 43 and Black, described the impact of the victory for the country — a description echoed by Martin Peens, 60 and white; Jacqui Vermaak, 56 and white; Happy Mthethwa, 40 and Black; Michelle Volny, 43 and white; and Gloria Leshilo, 34 and Black.

The 2009 Hollywood blockbuster “Invictus” told the story of South Africa’s first victory in the Rugby World Cup in 1995, just a year removed from the start of democracy, and how it unified a racially divided nation. Back then, I chalked up all the lump-throated racial harmony the movie portrayed to Hollywood romanticism. I thought there was no way that a rugby victory could have had a real impact on the racial divide in a country fresh out of decades of legalized racism.

But I’ve now lived in South Africa for the past two years and experienced the thrill of watching the Springboks, as the team is called, win a world championship while cheering along with the country’s rugby-obsessed population.

The harmony that World Cup success produces, I can report, is no exaggeration.

The first thing I would like to highlight is although the report is in The New York Times, the reporter, John Eligon, was reporting from Johannesburg, South Africa, which gives you a closer approach to the story. He put together different dialects that are spoken in the country and used it as a demonstration of the union that gave the championship. The passage tells a story, beginning with the celebration at the airport and then providing background information about South Africa’s rugby history and the impact of previous victories

The writer incorporates their own perspective and experiences, which adds a personal touch to the narrative and makes it relatable. The article includes quotes from individuals from different backgrounds, sharing their views on the impact of the victory.

The earth is rounded!

400 years ago, Italian astronomer, physicist, and scientist Galileo Galilei went to jail for telling the truth, the earth is rounded!

Today virtually every child grows up learning that the earth orbits the sun, but four centuries ago, the idea of a heliocentric solar system was so controversial that the Catholic Church classified it as a heresy and warned the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei to abandon it.

Galileo observed by telescope that the planets were round a finding that was still considered new and controversial at the time despite the previous circumnavigation of our globe. Galileo also hypothesized that the Earth rotated around the sun a view that went beyond controversy but was considered blasphemy by the Roman Catholic Church, as it explicitly contradicted the Holy Scriptures. Galileo was tried by the Roman Inquisition in 1615, convicted of heresy, and was forced to recant his views, and placed under house arrest for the remainder of his life.

Today, scientists use geodesy, which is the science of measuring Earth’s shape, gravity, and rotation. Geodesy provides accurate measurements that show Earth is round. The National Geodetic Survey measures and monitors our ever-changing planet.

Galileo was right, NASA has stated even though our planet is a sphere, it is not a perfect sphere. Because of the force caused when Earth rotates, the North and South Poles are slightly flat. Earth’s rotation, wobbly motion, and other forces are making the planet change shape very slowly, but it is still round.

Sandro Tonali: Italian FA agrees 10-month ban for Newcastle footballer | Newcastle United | The Guardian

Sandro Tonali will be banned from soccer for 10 months over breaches of rules on betting on matches in Italy, the head of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said on Thursday.

The 23-year-old, a £55m summer signing from AC Milan, will miss the remainder of Newcastle’s season and Italy’s Euro 2024 finals campaign, should they qualify.

Tonali will not be able to play competitive football until August 2024 but is free to train with Newcastle and play in friendlies.

He must also attend treatment sessions for problem gamblers and give a series of talks about his experience over a further eight-month period as part of his deal with Italian authorities.

The federation acted following an investigation by Turin prosecutors into soccer players using illegal websites to bet on games.

Tonali had been assisting the investigation and his legal team have been working on a plea bargain after he admitted to making bets on AC Milan to win games in a hearing at the Italian Federation in Turin.

Without his cooperation, Tonali could have faced up to a three-year suspension under FIFA rules.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina said Tonali was suspended for 18 months but that eight of those months were commutable by attending treatment for gambling addiction and making at least 16 public appearances at centres for young soccer players and associations for recovering addicts.

“We can’t just think about punishing the boys and not helping them recover,” Gravina added. “I think it’s worth a lot more, rather than a month ban, eight months of giving talks about what they went through, in an honest way and with the right behavior.”

The agreement of a 10-month ban is now in place and confirmation from UEFA will come soon. Newcastle still have a talent on their hands. We saw him come off the bench against Borussia Dortmund and I thought he did very well in that second half.

Eddie Howe, Newcastle United coach has said that it is a time for everyone at the club to throw their arms around Sandro and support him. He’s had it from his manager, his team-mates and from the supporters.”

The writing style of this news article is objective and provides information about Sandro Tonali being banned from playing soccer for betting on football matches in Italy.

The article includes specific details, such as the duration of the ban, which is 10 months, and the conditions attached to it, such as attending treatment for gambling addiction and giving talks about the experience. Also provides the response from his coach, which gives an inside view of the problem.

As expected, the commissioners of the Federal Communications Commission voted along party lines to move forward with a plan to largely restore Obama-era net neutrality protections. All three of the agency’s Democratic commissioners voted in favor of the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, with the two Republican commissioners dissenting.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, who has long supported net neutrality rules, last month announced a proposal to reclassify fixed broadband as an essential communications service under Title II of the Communications Act of 1934. It also aims to reclassify mobile broadband as a commercial mobile service.

Supporters believe that net neutrality protections are fundamental to an open and equitable internet. When such rules are in place, internet service providers have to provide users with access to every site, content and app at the same speeds and conditions. They can’t block or give preference to any content and they’re not allowed to, for instance, charge video streaming streaming services for faster service.

The FCC will now seek comment on the proposal with members of the public and stakeholders (such as ISPs) having the chance to weigh in on the agency’s plan. After reviewing and possibly implementing feedback, the FCC is then expected to issue a final rule on the reclassification of broadband internet access. As the Electronic Frontier Foundation points out, this means net neutrality protections could be restored as soon as next spring.

It’s still not a sure thing that net neutrality protections will return, however. The implementation of revived rules could face legal challenges from the telecom industry. It may also take quite some time for the FCC to carry out the rulemaking process, which may complicate matters given that we’re going into a presidental election year.

Nevertheless, net neutrality is a major priority for the fully staffed commission under Rosenworcel. “We’re laserlike focused on getting this rulemaking process started, then we’re going to review the record, and my hope is we’ll be able to move to order,”

The article includes specific details, such as the names of the commissioners and the proposed reclassification of broadband services, Quotations are used effectively, such as the quotes of FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel.

Overall, the writing style effectively conveys the essential information and context surrounding the FCC’s actions regarding net neutrality, making it a well-structured and informative news article.

The 2030 men’s World Cup will be hosted by six countries on three different continents to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the first edition of the tournament, soccer’s world governing body FIFA announced.

According to CNN, “Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will co-host the tournament, while Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina will all stage an opening match each to mark 100 years since the first World Cup was staged. The 1930 tournament was hosted and won by Uruguay” (Morse).

The head of South America’s soccer governing body Conmebol, Alejandro Dominguez, said on Wednesday that Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will host the first three matches of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, reported Reuters.

“We believed in Big. The 2030 Centenary World Cup begins where it all began. Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will host the inaugural matches of the #Centennial World Cup,” wrote the president on his X Account minutes after FIFA released the statement.

Later at a press conference, President Alejandro Domínguez said “It’s a historic event and CONMEBOL is happy. We’re honoring the memory of those who came before us and today we’re at the level. “We appreciate again the confidence that FIFA and our colleagues showed for a historic event and date,”

“The good thing is that in having three countries, three hosts, we’re talking about almost no other investment more than what already exists. And that’s very good news because we all know that in that context, unfortunately, we’re not able to compete if this had been a question of investment or money demands”, reports CNN after the press conference.

The offer from the South American nations had long been considered an outsider, however, to the three-nation bid from Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, which was officially declared the sole bidder for 2030. But under the new arrangement to recognize the tournament’s centenary, each nation will get to take a turn as a host, reported The New York Times.

Santiago Minneti, an Argentinian tennis player at Morningside University and a big supporter of the Argentina Soccer National Team said, “I am a little disappointed by FIFA’s decision to only give one match to each of the South American countries, but I will equally enjoy seeing a 2030 World Cup match in Argentina. The reality is that my country does not have the necessary infrastructure to host the World Cup.”

The six countries had initially joined forces regionally in separate bids for the hosting rights to the 100th anniversary World Cup, a globe-stopping, month-long soccer festival that produces billions of dollars in revenue for FIFA every four years, reports The New York Times.

According to The New York Times, “The complexity and size of the World Cup have grown steadily in recent decades, with the next edition — in 2026 — expanded by 12 teams to 48 in total, making it the largest in history. That size, and FIFA’s exacting requirements for bidding countries and stadiums, mean that few nations are now capable of staging the event alone.”

The 2030 edition of the World Cup will see Morocco host the global tournament for the first time, also becoming the first North African side to host official games.

Portugal will also be a new first-time host, with Spain having hosted the competition in 1982.

It is exciting to live a World Cup in Spain, my parents always talk about how the 1982 World Cup was and how it helped the sport of soccer in Spain, I am anxious for the World Cup to be played in my country and see how everything will change, both to see how they remodel or make new stadiums or to see how the cities in Spain are prepared to receive people from all over the world. Stated Marco Lanza, a Spanish soccer player at Morningside University.

The 2030 championship will now start with an opening ceremony at the Estadio Centenario in Uruguay, the site of the 1930 final, and stadiums in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Asunción, Paraguay.

The three nations and their opponents would have to travel to Spain, Portugal, or Morocco to continue with the rest of the tournament, reports The New York Times.

The Guardian reported that the 2030 World Cup is to be played on three continents after Morocco, Portugal and Spain won the race to host the 48-team tournament but Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay were handed the opening three matches.

The decision, which caught even seasoned Fifa watchers by surprise, means that World Cup 2030 will involve teams playing in six countries, each of which will qualify automatically. The World Cup has never been played on more than one continent before and proposals for a tournament to be played over thousands of miles was met with shock by climate groups.

According to The Guardian, FIFA is committed to rotating World Cups between confederations, and although the Uefa/Caf bid was the favorite for 2030, CONMEBOL – the South American confederation – has not hosted a World Cup since 2014 and was looking to commemorate the centenary of the first World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930. Infantino said the first match of the 2030 tournament would be held at the Estádio Centenário in Montevideo, the same venue as the first World Cup.

The decision to allow Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay to host some 2030 World Cup games could be seen as a consolation prize for the CONMEBOL. However, the reality is that these three countries are not adequately prepared to host a full World Cup of football at this time. They do not have the necessary infrastructure, security, logistics, and other aspects that are essential to organize an event of this magnitude. FIFA’s decision to host only 3 games in South America is a harsh defeat in the sense that the region could not secure the entire World Cup.

In a small town in Iowa called Waterloo, a passionate guy named Thomas Ritchie grew up. From a young age, his passion for words and writing led him to pursue a career in journalism. After graduating as a Mass Communication major at Mount Marty, Thomas worked for more than 25 years in journalism. He spent his days covering news for the Sioux City Journal and The Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan newspapers, learning the importance of good writing, journalistic techniques, and the ability to create headlines that hooked readers.

But, as Thomas said, “Journalism is not dead, it’s just different”. With the evolution of technology and the emergence of social media, he saw the media landscape change dramatically. Social networks became a fundamental tool to obtain information, buy products, and carry out banking operations. Mobile phones carried news at unprecedented speed. Thomas said “As a news writer, my feed was weird, with different news and offers”

Seeing how traditional journalism faced a steady decline, Thomas abandoned journalism and entered the marketing world. His writing experience and ability to create persuasive content made him an essential asset to an insurance company, where he currently works. His role is to persuade people to buy insurance over the Internet, using all the skills he has honed throughout his career.

Despite his successful transition into marketing from journalism, Thomas dreams of being a farmer at some point in his life. Meanwhile, hockey and cycling are his hobbies, although now instead of covering news, he is covering the needs of insurance clients across the country, where he said, “I am making more money than in journalism”

Despite changes in the news industry, his passion for words and writing remains in his life, regardless of the direction his career takes in the future.

The Portland Trail Blazers are trading All-NBA guard Damian Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks in a three-team deal, league sources tell The Athletic.

According to the report by Shams Charania, these are all the transfer movements:

Portland Trail Blazers receive: Deandre Ayton (Phoenix), Jrue Holiday (Milwaukee), Toumani Camera (Phoenix), 2029 1st round draft pick (Milwaukee), possibility of exchanging 2028 and 2030 1st round picks with Milwaukee.
Milwaukee Bucks receive: Damian Lillard (Portland),
Phoenix Suns receive: Jusuf Nurkic (Portland), Grayson Allen (Milwaukee), Nassir Little (Portland), Keon Johnson (Portland).

The Athletic Reports that the blockbuster deal has ripple effects that will be felt around the entire league, including other teams who had been seen as possible destinations for Lillard. The Miami Heat had long been believed to be the most likely destination for Lillard, with the NBA superstar letting it be known that it was his preferred destination. In recent days, reports had emerged that the Toronto Raptors could wind up with Lillard.

In Milwaukee, Lillard will join forces with one of the top players in the league  Giannis Antetokounmpo, making the Bucks an instant title favorite. For Portland, it is the end of an era that began in 2012 when Lillard was selected with the sixth overall pick in that summer’s draft.

Winners

Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks lose two good defensive pieces like Holiday and Allen but now they bring together two of the best scorers in the NBA and position themselves as great favorites in the Eastern Conference for the coming seasons. Lillard has a contract until the 2026-2027 season and Antetokounmpo is assured in Milwaukee for at least two more seasons.

Phoenix Suns

The Suns are entering into this transfer to finally find a new destination for Deandre Ayton, the 25 year old center was not comfortable with the Suns recently. They acquired Jusuf Nurkic from the Portland Trail Blazers, who averaged, according to Basketball References, 12.4 points and 9.8 rebounds in the 16 Playoff games he played in his career. They also added depth to their bench with a great shooter in Grayson Allen.

Loser

Miami Heat

Miami Heat had been chasing Lillard all summer, and in the end, they got nothing. The Heat operated this offseason as if they already had Lillard on the roster. They let two starters from their Finals team Gave Vincent and Max Strus walk in free agency. They left two open roster spots, hoping to fill them with Lillard.

Unknown

Portland Trail Blazers

Portland receives Deandre Ayton (25), a young all-star who will be surrounded by other youngsters such as Anfernee Simons (24) and Scott Henderson (19). The unknown is what they are going to do with Jrue Holiday, the former point guard of the Milwaukee Bucks can be a piece with which Portland can get rounds of the draft or get several players to surround the current squad.

We will see what happens next season with these four teams, time will speak for itself, if the managers of these teams made a mistake or were right in a great way, the fans are definitely the winners, they will enjoy these stars in new teams.
