Yesterday South Iowa Highway Patrol Ordered Hand-Held Radar Gun ban

Concerns that longterm exposure to the radiation waves emitted from the radar guns caused 70 devices to be withdrawn yesterday from Sioux City. Two months after three municipal officers in cedar Rapids filed workman’s compensation claims, saying they developed cancer from using the hand–held units.

Adam Smith said, “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue.” This ban comes as a precaution while studies are conducted about possible links between cancer and the use of such guns.

Student Interview

I interviewed a fellow classmate, Aaron Robinson. I asked him for a little backstory on his life like where he grew up and he said he lived in California for 10 years before moving to Kansas.  My next question was if he has traveled and what some of the most interesting locations were. Aaron said he has visited Florida, Jamaica, and his parents used to live in Hawaii. Those responses prompted my next question, about the most exciting things he has ever done and he said, when he was swimming in Florida, a group of large Manatees showed up and swam next to him. Finally, to learn more about who he is, I asked him to think of a quote of wisdom, and his response was, “Enjoy the little things, being alive and healthy is a miracle itself, appreciate everything.” From my quick interview with Aaron, I got to know him and get an understanding of his experiences and values.

Professional Sports Use their Voice

The New York Times writes an article titled, “Entertainment Is Power in Push for Racial Justice.” The media has been keeping a closer eye on police and Black Lives Matter issues, which makes it important for people to stay informed on this situation. Their article details the most recent event occurred where professional sports organizations boycotted their scheduled games yesterday in response to the recent police shooting which caused the death of Jacob Blake. Karen Boykin-Towns, a senior counselor at the communications firm Sard Verbinnen and a vice chair of the NAACP’s national board of directors, was quoted that the strike, shows that this issue of excessive force of police and Black Lives Matter is not going away.” This showcases how athletes are starting to use the power of their celebrity voices to speak out with specific demands to America through entertainment. The article mentions the still unanswered question of how the leagues will proceed, and if this will spread to other outlets of the entertainment industry.
