{"id":55,"date":"2025-02-24T14:04:24","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T20:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/commcapstone25\/?page_id=55"},"modified":"2025-04-22T14:52:12","modified_gmt":"2025-04-22T19:52:12","slug":"what-it-is","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/commcapstone25\/","title":{"rendered":"Leisure should be appreciated"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A 2023 study in\u00a0<em>Frontiers of Psychology<\/em>\u00a0concluded, \u201cHow people engage in leisure is an important but frequently underappreciated aspect of meaning in life.\u201d The concept of leisure covers a broad array of activities, but what the study found to be most relevant in defining the term was freedom of choice:\u00a0<strong>\u201cThe essence of leisure lies less in the specific activity than in the subjective perception of freedom, choice, and intrinsic motivation.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Unfortunately, the research then went on to report the most common leisure activity in today\u2019s society is watching television.\u00a0It seems we also choose to enjoy our leisure moments alone.\u00a0<em>The Atlantic<\/em>\u00a0recently referred to our present time as &#8220;The Anti-Social Century,&#8221; and noted cell phones have accelerated our \u201cnational anti\u2013social streak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Free time and leisure \u2014 those moments that are not assigned to work or school \u2014 are rare for college students. Between classes, work and athletics, free time is at a premium. We wanted to explore the experience of leisure at Morningside University. What do students choose when they have free time? When they have a moment of leisure do they enjoy it together or choose to be alone?
