Last night, Stuart Scott reflected on his ongoing battle with cancer and the importance of family and friends with an inspiring and emotional speech when he was presented with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award.
Stuart Scott is an ESPN sports broadcaster who has made appearances on multiple NFL broadcasts and has covered the MLB playoffs. Scott was initially diagnosed with cancer in his appendix in 2007, and after a period of remission, he was rediagnosed in 2011.
In his speech, Scott spoke about his battle with cancer and how he would not be able to fight without support from the people closest to him.
“So, live. Live. Fight like hell. And when you get too tired to fight then lay down and rest and let somebody else fight for you. That’s also very, very important. I can’t do this ‘don’t give up’ thing all by myself,” Scott said.
Scott also mentioned his girlfriend and daughters, who he said he would not be on the stage without. He touched many people’s hearts last night when he asked his youngest daughter, Sydni, to join him on stage and give him a hug.
“The best thing I have ever done, the best thing I will ever do, is be a dad to Taelor and Sydni. It’s true. I can’t ever give up because I can’t leave my daughters.”
Scott also inspired his audience, and altered the way many people may view the fight against cancer. He said he recently realized something when he was receiving treatment for his illness.
Scott said, “When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live.”
With his acceptance speech last night, Stuart Scott inspired and touched the lives of many people through his bravery and strength.
The first graf works as a lead, but move “last night” to the end of the graf.
Nicely organized. Nicely summarized. Good use of transitions. But cut the last graf. Let readers and viewers decide what happened and who was touched.
