Let the chaos begin!

Very odd, and reported in a very odd way….I think this says a lot about our society, and what is happening to our children.

I have been following this story since it started, and I am very heartbroken at the result. I was hoping things would turn out better of course, but this turned at out one step from as terrible as it could – Sarah is the only survivor of this ordeal. She has no mother, no brother, and I dno’t know if her father is available. This was covered with a lot of dignity, and the journalist writing this article wrote it very well, and detailed the candle light vigil that was held at the site, and also updated us on Sarah’s condition, and told us that the defendant had not entered a plea and is being held in prison – those two things which we really want to know.

Good Story, I give it an A.

Body issues are always news. This is not an issue that will ever go away, and it is important that we keep up with it. Parents need to watch their kids, especially their girls and make sure that they are cared for when they do in fact have esteem issues. I’m glad that this issue is still getting coverage.

I am not in the LEAST bit impressed with the dirty son of a bitch who did this – but i loved the way this is reported. I am just the kind of reporter who would do this story – JUST TO GIVE IT COVERAGE AND HELP THE CORPORATE BE CAUGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kudos to this journalist.

This article covers a serious Cholera out-break in the slum camps of Port-Au-prince Haiti where a large portion of the earth quake survivors are congregating. The article successfully covers this. This is a wonderful example of the way I would like to cover stories when I am a journalist.

This is who and where story. That is covered and stated well.

They identified the problem, and went to all the right people to talk about it.

They outlined the solution very well.

I am very pleased with this article, I love human interest articles that end with everyone getting involved to help solve the situation. I hope things continue to get better in Haiti.

The congo is said to be the rape capital of the world, and 15,00 women were raped last year. They marched and spoke out on this issue, because they feel ignored, and rape has become a weapon of war in the congo, and it takes place in areas where there are many rebel groups stationed. This is a huge issue, as sexual violence doesn’t really hurt a person as much physically as it does mentally. That wound will never heal, and it ruins the victims life. I hope that this march reached the ears and hearts of the people it most needed to

Vegans/Vegetarians on Campus!

Morningside College has been progressive in the Green movement, and is chock full helpful professors, as well as boasts an open minded student body. It is safe to say that anybody could feel at home at Morningside College. However, there is a growing community at Morningside College: the Vegan and Vegetarian community. So this leaves a question: is the kitchen staff as progressive and open minded as the professors and student body?

Many people do not know that there is a difference between a Vegan, and a Vegetarian. A Vegetarian does not eat meat, however being a vegan is quite different. Vegans do not eat any meat, dairy, or animal by-products. The Vegan motto is “If it can look back at you – do not eat it or anything that comes from it” – an anonymous quote. So it was of major concern to see if the kitchen the staff on campus was aware of that difference. So obviously, the first person interviewed would be the campus Executive chef.

Casey Benton has been the executive chef at Morningside for two years. When asked if he was familiar with Veganism and Vegetarianism, and was he aware there was a difference, Benton replied “Yes, very familiar with the effect of being either of these two- I do know the difference”.  Mr. Benton also mentioned that it is important for all students to have a meal plan on campus, and that for every lunch and dinner he prepares a vegan/vegetarian meal, and that if a student needs something special, to let him know! Chef Casey is very Vegan and food allergen friendly, and Shiran Nathaniel would agree, and was happy to help set up the interview. The Cafeteria however, isn’t the only Vegan friendly spot on campus – the “Spoonholder Café” is possibly one of the most Vegan friendly spots on campus.

When visiting Nancy Boyle, “Spoon Holder Café” manager, she was as always, extremely happy to help, and went as far as letting me see her food rotation menu! They rotate food items regularly, but always have something available ranging from: Fruit Cups, Veggie Cups, natural potato chips, Kind Bars, Icy fruit smoothies, teas, and they are willing to substitute soy milk in any of their coffees! Nancy always says “Happy to help! We try to have something for everyone!” and she definitely takes that to a whole new level every day. With the abundance of food options for the Vegan Student at the food spots on campus, we wouldn’t have to cook for ourselves at all, unless of course we wanted to! Vegan student Nicole Raphael is a wonderful example of a Vegan Chef, and she offered a couple of websites that anyone could use to grab an easy recipe from.

Morningside College was and remains a progressive campus, both in spirit and in action. Whether it is accommodating a Vegan student, or Tom Gilbert not resting until our cafeteria serves cage free eggs, we are at front line of progressive philosophy, and will never cease making an example to other colleges all around the world.

It looks like Morningside College has a friend in a high place. Former Governor Terry Branstad visited Morningside College October 11th, to drum up publicity for the end of the campaign. The conference was small, rather intimate and the governor was able to answer all questions. He however made it a point to concentrate on an rather important topic: Education.

Governor Branstad said firmly “I am a friend of private education, and education in general”. Governor Branstad said that he would assert his power to make sure that all teachers are board certified, and to expand the Iowa tuition grant. He also mentioned that Chet Culver did an over all budget cut of ten percent – that took away from school funding not only in college but as well as in private schools. The governor was on fire, a crowd pleaser, and even received a standing reception, but his crowd left a lot to be desired.

“I felt as though there were numerous idiots in the crowd. If you don’t know how the system works, you should listen so ya learn more.” Said senior Grace Horner. This is exactly why Terry Branstad needs to be elected – he’s a friend of education, and apparently, our crowds need to be more educated.

I had to choose this – because this is a great example of the news value of Novelty! A woman in full on fledged labor walked into walmart and took….ummm Software!!!!!!  Can you believe it? If your in labor, and if I was in labor I would be at St. Lukes, not wal mart!

Let me know what you think!

There is a growing community of Vegan’s on campus – I included. So with a growing community, I decided that I would explore some of the options we have for students on campus – especially since it is no secret that if you live on campus – you absolutely must purchase a meal plan.

I spoke with Shiran Nathaniel, who was very swift, though he was out of town and couldn’t be interviewed, he was very helpful, and he helped me set up an interview with Execute Chef Casey Benton.

Mr. Benton has been employed with Sodexo here at Morningside College for two years now.
