{"id":80,"date":"2011-01-28T17:14:52","date_gmt":"2011-01-28T22:14:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/?p=80"},"modified":"2011-01-28T17:14:52","modified_gmt":"2011-01-28T22:14:52","slug":"buon-giorno","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/2011\/01\/28\/buon-giorno\/","title":{"rendered":"Buon Giorno!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ciao!\u00a0 This is about the extent of my Italian currently, but I think I will be expanding a bit this semester.\u00a0 I am currently a participant in a pilot project at my college to see how we might use Rosetta Stone in our school.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure what the future holds so I am hesitant to make any guesses, but in any case I hopped on the chance to learn the language for free.<\/p>\n<p>At this point I can name some simple objects, bambina\/o, donna, uomo, mela, uovo, penne, cavallo, etc.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve learned mangia, cucina, corre, etc for verbs.\u00a0 I have attempted to use Rosetta Stone before for Spanish and it is the same progression as I had before.\u00a0 I am hopeful that I will be able to become conversational with a computer-based language program.\u00a0 At least we have supplemented the program with monthly meetings of the group, but also I am close with several of the people, so I may begin saying random phrases in Italian to them&#8230;at least until I get to the point of being able to have a meaningful sentence beyond &#8216;the girl swims, and the women eat.&#8217;\u00a0 In time it will come.<\/p>\n<p>Right now the one complaint I have is that I am learning phrases to describe other people, not myself.\u00a0 So I cannot even say &#8220;I am learning Italian.&#8221;\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure the program gets there.\u00a0 I also cannot ask questions of others &#8220;what do you have?&#8221; because I have not been introduced to that conjugation yet.\u00a0 But again I&#8217;m sure it will come.<\/p>\n<p>I think that this could serve as an interesting model for one of our college&#8217;s outcomes, which is lifelong learning.\u00a0 There are several faculty and staff members who have chosen to do this out of pure interest (of course the incentive of a free language class helps).\u00a0 Perhaps students will begin to see faculty practicing their Italian with each other.\u00a0 What a cool thing to see&#8230;faculty and students working together to learn something new!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an interesting model that does not come without its criticism.\u00a0 Certainly you do not get a taste of the actual culture where the language is used, which can be important for language comprehension, but perhaps for beginning learners it is a good start.\u00a0\u00a0 For now I will practice and try not to let it interfere too much with my need to do real work.\u00a0 Perhaps at some point in the future I will attempt to write a short blog in Italian!<\/p>\n<p>Arrivederci!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ciao!\u00a0 This is about the extent of my Italian currently, but I think I will be expanding a bit this semester.\u00a0 I am currently a participant in a pilot project at my college to see how we might use Rosetta Stone in our school.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure what the future holds so I am hesitant [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":26,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-80","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/80","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/26"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=80"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/80\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":81,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/80\/revisions\/81"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=80"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=80"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wordpress.morningside.edu\/christopherson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=80"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
