Goddess Pilgrimage

When reading about Goddess Pilgrimage, I was surprised to find that only women make these pilgrimages. I know that it is mostly women that are Paganists, but, I thought that the idea of Paganism was that men and women are equal. I also thought it was interesting that the author kept comparing pilgrimage to tourism, as I haven’t thought of the similarities between the two.  I do know that you can have life changing experiences when you’re just traveling and when you least expect it. I think that these experiences would relate more to the Turner model of pilgrimage than the Eliade model.

I agree that it was interesting to see that only women were making these pilgrimages because I too thought that their religion is based on the equality of men and women. I had never thought about tourism and religion being similar but I agree with you that life changes happen when you least expect it. The author did mention the Turner model in detail consisting of limin, communitas, and even metaphorical death. This was an interesting read and hopefully more becomes clear after we talk in class.

I found it very interesting that Goddess Pilgrimages were just for women also. I hadn’t really thought about Goddess being just women and then throughout the reading when the author just kept mentioning “her” or “she” I then figured it out. I still am not real sure why they just have a pilgrimage for just women. It makes me wonder if they have a pilgrimage out there that is just for men. I agree with you when you said that you thought the Turner model was more apparent in this reading because of the limin and specifically communitas. Then again I also felt like it related to Eliade because of the sacred spaces and the significant places that they worshipped to. Overall, after doing this reading I had the same thoughts you did.
