U.S. Crude Oil Hits Highs of the Year

U.S. crude oil futures extended their three-moth-long rally, bringing them to their highest level of the year. Futures for November delivery settled at $93.68 a barrel, up 3.6% from yesterday’s close and more than 30% since June. The jump extended a run-up in prices that began in early July, after production cuts made by OPEC and its allies reduced global oil supplies to a level below demand.

U.S. crude settled at its highest level since August 2022, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Brent crude, its global counterpart, finished at $96.55, its highest close since November. Oil prices are up about 17% since the start of the year.

This article is very well written. It is clear and to the point. This is important for people to know because everyone will be affected by the increased price of oil.

Gun Story

Two men wearing ski masks robbed a BJ’s Drug store at gunpoint at approximately 8:30 p.m. last night. One of the men held the store owner, Barney Joseph, at gunpoint while the other removed almost $400 from the cash register.

One of the desk sergeants mentions Joseph kept a pistol under the counter, but he decided not to use it. “I could have reached for the gun,” he told police, “but it felt unwise.” The robbery was over in less than a minute.

While doing more research, it was discovered that Joseph’s father was killed during a hold up at the same store almost 25 years ago. Joseph was asked if he recalled that shooting during the holdup.

“Yes, Dad resisted, I guess. Anyway, they found him shot to death, his own gun is his hand, and a bullet in the store’s ceiling. I’d rather part with my money than my life,” he said.

Air Quality Reaches Unhealthy Levels in Bay Area After Wildfires

Smoke from northwestern California and southwestern Oregon has blown over from the Bay Area and is expected to linger until Thursday.

Wind Directions are likely to shift late Thursday and Friday, bringing relief from the smoke. Air quality levels are expected to remain unhealthy for sensitive groups, such as people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens, until Thursday, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The National Weather Service put out a fire weather watch early Wednesday morning that will remain in effect until Thursday morning. “The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity,” National Weather Service meteorologists wrote.

This article is important for people in the northwestern California and southwestern Oregon region. These people need to be aware of what is happening in the environment around them, so they can prepare themselves and stay safe during these conditions. This article is well written and clearly states all the information someone would need to know.

Scavenger Hunt

I was assigned to acquire a restaurant recommendation and a photo of two strangers.

My first objective was a restaurant recommendation. I talked with Monica Olsen, a student at Morningside University. She recommended the Japanese Steakhouse. “My favorite thing is the hibachi chicken dinner. I get it every time I go.”

My second objective was to get a cell phone photo of two strangers. I got a photo of Brooke Pruner and Wendy Wilde. They were hesitant to have their photo taken at first and even suggested I take a photo of other people, but eventually agreed. “There are photos of people on the wall,” Wendy suggested.

2 Charged With Murder in Day Care Death of 1-Year-Old

The owner of the day care center in the Bronx and a neighbor were charged with the death of Nicholas Dominici, who never woke up from a nap. Police said they believed he had been exposed to an opioid.

Emergency medical workers arrived to find Nicholas Dominici unconscious. They also found a 2-year-old boy and an 8-month-old girl, both unconscious and unresponsive. All three children showed symptoms of opioid exposure, the police said. They gave the children Narcan, the overdoes-reversal medication and took them to the hospital. Nicholas was pronounced dead at Montefiore Medical Center, and the other three children were in critical or stable condition.

This article is really well written. This is a sensitive topic, so you have to be careful in how you share this information. I like how this article is very clear about what happened. I also like how they describe the dangers of opioids for both children and adults.

FDA Approves Newest Round of Covid-19 Boosters

The Food and Drug Administration approved a new round of Covid boosters as the number of cases and hospitalizations rise in the United States. The vaccine will roll out alongside the seasonal flu vaccine in order to protect people from potentially lethal respiratory viruses. F.D.A’s top vaccine expert, Dr. Peter Marks, says “Vaccination remains critical to public health and continued protection against serious consequences of Covid-19, including hospitalization and death.”

According to the New York Times, the FDA granted full approval for the new formulas for people who are 12 and older and authorized them to protect infants six months and older through age 11. The CDC is leaning toward a broad recommendation that will apply to all ages, but it is possible they will push for those at the greatest risk to receive the vaccine first. People over the age of 65 and people with weakened immune systems are considered to be the greatest risk. Health and social care workers will also be included in the first roll out.

If the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention signs off Tuesday, injections could be available in pharmacies, clinics and doctor’s offices by the end of the week, says the Washington Post.

This round of vaccines is different than in the previous years. In previous years, the U.S. government bought hundreds of millions of vaccine doses and distributed them for free.

The prices are expected to be significantly more than the U.S. government paid with Moderna stating it would price its vaccine at $130 a dose and Pfizer considering a similar price. Many people with health insurance will be able to get boosted without having to pay anything out of pocket. People without insurance should be able to get the shots-at a retail pharmacy and certain government sites-at no cost under a federal program, said the Wall Street Journal.

New Study Shows Hand-Held Radar Guns May Be Linked to Cancer

East Dakota Highway patrol issued a ban of hand-held radar guns yesterday, which includes part of the Sioux City, Iowa area. This ban was ordered as a precaution because of concerns that troopers could develop cancer from longterm exposure to the radiation waves emitted by the devices. Studies are being conducting that show a possible link between cancer and the use of such guns. “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue,” Adam Smith said. “The whole situation is under review.”

This ban affects 70 radar guns that will be withdrawn from service. Troopers will continue to use radar units with transmitters mounted on the outside of their cruisers. The ban is considered to be the first of its kind by a state police agency. It comes two months after three municipal officers in Central City filed workman’s compensation claims, saying they developed cancer from using the hand-held devices.

More information is to come as further studies are conducted.
