Stuart Scott Speech

Stuart Scott received the Jimmy V Perseverance Award and talked about his battle with cancer. One of the first things he said during his speech was “Every day I am reminded that our life’s journey is really about the people who touch us.” This speech showed how grateful and honored he was to be receiving this award. He has presented this award to other public figures, and he did not believe he belonged with them. He also quoted something Jim Valvano said to him many years ago. He said, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.” Scott is battling cancer, but he is not going to give up.

“When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live.” Scott then proceeds to mention the people he lives for. His two daughters, Taelor and Sydni, to which he says “I can’t give up because I can’t leave my daughters.” He then invites his youngest daughter to the stage for a hug and thanks everyone before exiting the stage.

  1. Not the most dynamic lead, Carissa. Maybe some combination of “Scott is battling cancer, but he is not going to give up” and “our life’s journey is really about the people.”

Be aware: You do not want to cover the speech chronologically. Most important first, no matter where it is in the speech.
