Tens of billions of dollars has gone to purchasing nearly 1,000 jets to the New Delhi, Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) to be ready for 109 million passengers next year. They are in preparation of becoming the second largest airport, only behind Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Out of the 1.4 billion residents of India, roughly 3% of the population uses planes as transportation. this makes up for 42 million students, engineers, businessmen, and more. This development will help ease travel for many of these people so there are and increased amount of flights to the many destinations that DEL fly too.
This previous July, they added a fourth runway as well as an elevated taxiway to increase efficiency with the magnitude of the airport. out of the 1,000 planes that were ordered, 250 of them came from airbus and 220 of them came from Boeing. With this an additional purchase of 500 Airbus A320’s were ordered to increase the number of domestic flights.
The growth of Indian aviation has been mostly from homegrown airlines which have had a 36 percent increase since 2022. India is making use of their low cost carriers to start delivering flights to new destinations to account for their demand of foreign tourism.
Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India mentioned that the number of airports has doubled within the nine years since he took office. In 2009 there was 74, now there is 148. He predicts that by 2030, there will be 230 airports within India with an investment of $15 billion between now and then.
