Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that “agents of the government of India” planned an assassination of a Sikh community leader in British Colombia. India replied to the accusation and called it “absurd.”
Canada later announced that they expelled an Indian diplomat who was said to be the head of India’s intelligence agency in Canada. India accused the Canadians of sheltering Khalistani terrorists and extremists that threaten the security of India.
This accusation is likely to diminish relations between Canada and India. Canada has already suspended negotiations on a trade deal that was to be set this year. Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi eluded Trudeau from a list that was filled with leaders whom he had bilateral meetings with.
Many Indians living in Canada were fearful of this assault. the Indian population makes up roughly 4% of Canada’s entire population, most of them are Sikhs. The Two Ministers are not clear on. their remarks forward on what the Indian government will do with their cooperation with this allegation. Rumors about possible retribution by India are still in the air. Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative party stated that “If these allegations are true, they represent an outrageous affront to Canada’s sovereignty.” This act could cause much trouble between the two nations within time.
