After many concerns about the development of cancer that can be emitted by radar guns, spokesman Adam Smith states that Iowa is seeking a ban for these devices. Studies have shown that hand-held radar guns can develop cancer to troopers when there is a longterm exposure due to the radiation waves that get sent. A ban of these devices will hit 70 radar guns and will be withdrawn from use in service. This ban will hit most of the Iowa area and include part of Sioux City.

When this ban takes affect, state troopers will look to continue their use of radar units but only through the transmitters mounted on their cruisers.

This ban will affect The East Dakota Highway patrol first and is considered to be the first move on this subject by any state police agency. Smith claimed ” The feeling here is to er on the side of caution until more is known about the issue…the whole situation is under review”.
