Call Us the Hall Monitors

By Iandra Estupinian–The fall semester and the year 2018 have come to an end here at Morningside College and students are beginning to fall back into the rhythm of classes and assignments.

The majority of our school’s students are also adjusting back into living with roommates and in dorms rather than living in their own bedrooms with home-cooked meals. Sorry to say, the time has come to leave those two loves for weekend visits and get ready for another semester of dorm life.

But don’t worry, for all Resident Assistants (RA) and Head Residents (HR) are hopping back into the working role of being a housekeeper, parent, friend, and event planner to make life in the dorms enjoyable for all their residents.

“I love a lot about being an RA and the sense of community surrounding the position,” says junior and second-year RA, Rachel De Jong. “I get to form a strong bond with those I’m on staff with through weekly meetings, semester training, duty rounds, and planning functions.”

With that said, Residence Life is looking for new RA applicants for the 2019-2020 school year to help continue making dorm life fun, comfortable, and overall great college experience.

Residence Life needs outgoing and responsible individuals who can create a fun and safe atmosphere in the dorms. Living in the dorms at Morningside College is a huge deal to a large portion of the students on campus. RA’s have a huge job where they have to create interactive programs for the building’s community to get involved in, being a mediator between roommates, offering a hand or ear for individuals, and not being afraid to be the “hall monitor.”

“A must to becoming an RA is the ability to form relationships with the people around you quickly,” says DeJong. “Residents need to feel that they can trust you, rely on you, and be comfortable around you.” RA’s have to always be aware of what’s happening in their halls and being both the “good guy” and the “bad guy.”

Potential RA applicants also have to meet the formal requirements of Residence Life such as: being enrolled at Morningside College with at least 12 credits, maintaining a GPA of 2.25 for both semesters, currently or having lived on campus for at least one or more semesters, and having already completed a minimum of 12 college credit hours.

DISCLAIMER: Being an RA doesn’t mean you get your room or board free! RA’s are paid a full monthly stipend that pays for their room. They are given a single room to themselves and a hall to manage. During breaks, RA’s have the opportunity to earn extra stipends for working non-school days.

If you have any of the qualities above and fulfill the requirements, you can apply for the Residence Assistant at this link and click on morningside.erezlife.com in the New Candidates section. All applicants should also look at the listed dates in the section and make sure nothing conflicts with your current schedule.

All applications must be turned into Residence Life by February 6th, noon.
