Summer Activity: Disc Golf

By Taylor Pluim—As summer approaches, many are excited to be done with school and not have to worry about due dates for projects or papers. Although summer can sometimes be stress free, it can also get boring. It is easy to end up lounging around on the couch having nothing to do. However, there is a relatively new sport that is gaining popularity among young adults. And that sport is disc golf, otherwise known as Frisbee golf.

Disc golf is pretty much what it sounds like. The goal is to get the disc into the hole, or basket in this case. The tee-box is a cement slab where players can wind up momentum as they prepare to launch their disc into the air.

Throwing a disc into a basket may not be as easy as it sounds though. That could be part of the fun for some people though. Disc golf is also enjoyable if you are just looking for a new way to get outside.

Joseph Turner of Briar Cliff University says that “disc golf is fun because it combines the greatness of nature with the leisure skill of average Americans.”

So maybe throwing the disc around could just be something you do during a nature walk, since most courses are through somewhat wooded areas.

Stephen Edgar of WIT says that he “thinks disc golf is fun because it’s a hybrid sport where you can play for competition or for fun.”

Disc golf is very similar to real golf, at least in the structure of the game. Most holes are the same par as real golf, being between three and five. There are generally more three’s in disc golf than real golf, depending on the course played on.

As this sport grows in popularity there are more cities putting up disc golf courses as well. There is one right by Morningside College that is a part of Sertoma Park. Since it is public there is no cost to play, only the cost of the disc.

There are different kinds of discs, such as drivers, fairway drivers, and putters. However, you can easily get by with just a driver if you aren’t looking to get to serious about it. The prices of these discs range from about $15 to $25 new, but you could probably find some at a local garage sale or online for much cheaper if you don’t want to spend a lot.

If you are looking for a new summer activity to try, disc golf should be high on your list. It is relatively cheap, it gets you outside, and it is a good form of exercise because of the walking.
