Movie Review: Book of Eli

indexBy Taylor Pluim—After a nuclear war that leaves the earth lying in ruins, there is little hope to be found. In the midst of darkness there is a man named Eli, played by Denzel Washington, who is a light during these circumstances.

After the war there was a certain kind of book that was destroyed, I won’t name the book in order to not spoil anything. But the book was destroyed because some claimed it was what started the war in the first place. A voice from God instructed Eli to the last remaining book, and was then instructed him to go out west. Eli has many obstacles along the way, though. Mainly getting in his way is the leader of a small town who wants the book in order to control people and increase his own power. Eli continues on though trusting in God to get him to his destination safely.

This movie does a very good job of displaying a battle of good and evil. It is an action/drama movie that keeps you wondering how Eli is going to reach the end of his journey without being stopped or even killed. It has a very strong plotline and has its fair share of action, but it keeps you interested in much more than just gunfights. It highlights the dependence of Eli on God and is a major theme of the movie.

This movie would be good to watch for any Denzel Washington fans. He plays his typical character, a calm yet strong hero. The twist with his character this time is that he’s dependent on God instead of himself. This movie also has a good amount of action in it. There is some gore as well, though. If you don’t like blood and guts you can just close your eyes during those parts because the rest of the movie is interesting enough and the gore doesn’t consume the rest of the film. This movie would be good for most action/drama lovers.
