Time to Sign Up for Dorms

By Kayla Samek—Students at Morningside have more than assignments to worry about over Easter break. Starting on April 8^th, the traditional housing sign-up begins for students who plan on returning for the fall semester and living on campus.

Informational booths on the dorms will be in Yockey on Wednesday, March 31^st and Tuesday, April 7^th. The deadline for non-traditional housing like the apartments in Roadman or Lags, Waitt, or Poppen was March 26^th. The Garretson Houses are currently being processed into themed houses, and Resident Life is waiting on the results of the process.

Unlike previous years, the time student sign up for their rooms will not affect their ability to get into the dorm or on the floor they want. The housing points system, which was used only for the apartments in past years, is being applied to all of the housing options. These points are based on GPA, number of semesters on campus, and number of credit hours completed. The average points of the roommates signing up will be considered for the rooms. Students with higher points will generally get their first choices in housing.

Sheri Hineman, the assistant director of Resident Life, said using the point system instead of the first-come first-serve basis will “make the process as fair as possible.”

Housing sign-up starts on April 8^th, and all days for sign-up will be in Olsen Student Center at 9am to noon. Traditional housing begins for students staying in the same room in Roadman and the Plex on the first day of the housing sign-up.

Thursday, April 9^th is for students currently in Dimmit wanting to stay in a similar room—such as a double room—for next semester. Students who wish to change their room will sign up on Friday, April 10^th and also can sign up between 1pm and 4pm in addition to the 9am to noon time. Those students without roommates will sign up on Tuesday April 14^th, and will be assigned a roommate. All students signing up with a roommate will generally find out their room assignment by April 14^th. Those without roommates will find out before June 15^th.
