App Review: Walkr

walkr-ipadBy Kayla Perkins—For those looking for a fun reason to walk more, Walkr is the app for you. From the creators of Plant Nanny, Walkr is a GPS-based pedometer health game that is powered by the number of steps you take a day. The game uses the steps taken during the day and converts them into energy points that can be use in game to discover new planets. This app is available for Apple.

Set in space, the app has you playing as an astronaut exploring space. However, you cannot progress unless you walk. Walking while the app is running produces energy equal to how many steps you have taken, which allows you to blast off and find new planets to upgrade. As you upgrade new planets you can upgrade your ship and evolve to explore broader horizons.

Walkr is not only a step counter, but also a calorie tracker. By inputting your weight, the game can calculate how many calories you burn a day walking. By rewarding users for walking, it promotes a healthy lifestyle, and gives users a fun reason to stay healthy.

I played Walkr for a while, to see what it was like. The game is slightly confusing at first when you are trying to figure out the controls, but after a bit I figured out what was going on. There isn’t much to the game at first other than having it in your pocket and active as you walk around. I thought it was fun to keep track of my steps more than anything, but for those who like upgrading and improving things, this game is just the thing.

I give this game a 6/10, mostly because I don’t really have much of a reason to use it, and forget to turn it on. The controls are also small on my iPhone 4, so it makes it difficult to do things. However, many others give it good reviews, so I would definitely say it is worth a try.
