Television Review: CSI: Cyber

csicyber_thm_ios_367x208By Jenni Beaver—I mentioned in my last review that I love crime dramas and I watch almost every crime show on television. However, one big exception is CSI. The characters are empty, the storylines are cliché, and the show never hooked me. That was until I saw a commercial for a new spin-off called CSI: Cyber. On the first Wednesday in March I gave it a chance, and now I’m hooked.

CSI: Cyber follows, as you may expect, the cyber crime division of the FBI. As the lead character says in the first episode, they follow “crimes that start online and play out in the real world.” As a tech-geek, I was instantly drawn in.

The leader of the team has a story, but, considering only one episode has aired, I can’t report on what the full story is just yet. What I can say is, something changed her and she went from being a psychologist to an FBI agent because she “understands.” I’m sure viewers will get a better look inside Avery Ryan’s head as the season progresses. For now, I’m counting the alluded life story as a selling point, because it shows me that the characters aren’t empty.

As for the rest of the characters, I can’t really report on them either, but I can say that they each have their niche. They seem a little eccentric, but that comes with the tech territory. I’m excited to see their layers unfold.

The storyline in episode one was insane. It started out as a simple kidnapping being investigated by Major Crimes, but when Agent Ryan found out that the father of the baby heard foreign voices in the baby monitor, Cyber took over. A simple kidnapping turned into a web of deceit and the uncovering of an international baby auction. Sounds crazy, right? Mix that storyline with the hacking, tech-geeks, and one good looking James Van Der Beek, and I would say CSI: Cyber is a winner.

Five minutes into the show I changed my little recording dot to multiple dots. A series recording and one more crime drama on my must watch list. Tune in next Wednesday at nine on CBS for your taste of the cyberworld.

Miss the first episode? Go to CBS Online and watch the full episode to prepare yourself for next week.
