Television Show Review: Gotham

indexBy Derek Krayenhagen—For a show that shows the Caped Crusader so little, Gotham still intrigues and hasn’t disappointed so far. Batman is a huge character in the media world so when a show about Batman’s beginnings came up, everyone was a little hesitant.

Thus far Gotham has had its up and downs like most shows. For the downs, Gotham always had a great follow up episode. Now seventeen episodes in Gotham is closing in on the end of its first season.

Gotham stays interesting each week by revealing a famed villain or developing new villains along the way. Gotham follows police detective Jim Gordon, who eventually becomes the police commissioner when Batman is in full swing.

Another bright spot in the show is detective Harvey Bullock, played by Donal Logue, who seemingly steals every scene he’s in. Donal gives the show more of an edge, a grittier feel. Partnered along with the straight and narrow Gordon, Bullock goes against conventional methods, which gives Gotham another dimension to explore.

The villains we all know and love are just developing their habits. Each episode shows them growing into the villains they eventual become from the Batman comics. As for Batman, he is just a young boy at this point but he is coming along on his own journey as well.

Each week you want to tune in because you want to see who might appear next or see how the mob controversy plays out (which is a whole other awesome storyline completely). If you know anything about Batman, you know the names of the two biggest Mob bosses in Gotham, Falcone and Maroni. If you don’t know anything about Batman this will be a refreshing storyline that Gotham plays with throughout the show.

There is something in Gotham for everyone who loves Batman. The only downfall of the show would be not getting to see Batman yet but since this is the growing of Gotham, that should be expected.

If you need something to look forward to on Monday nights, Gotham can be that show. Gotham airs from 8pm to 9pm on Fox.

From what I’ve watched in these seventeen episodes Gotham may be around for a long time. Batman is an easy sell and everyone wants to see how these characters and villains start to play out, plus we all want to see Batman grow up.
