Thoughts of a Senior without a Post-Grad Plan

new-140122-graduation-jms-1904_75033af413ca334338a9cbfd07d9754aBy Hannah Severson– Many of my friends have the rest of their life planned out and know what they are doing when they graduate from college. I graduate in May and do not even have an idea as to what I am going to do.

By the time you get to your senior year of college, you typically are supposed to know what your plans are for after graduation. That is the norm for anyone graduating from college. I don’t see the rush to decide what I am going to do with the rest of my life. Yes, I will find a job that will hold me over until I find a career in something I’m more interested in. If I commit to a job right after graduation that I am not completely in love with, I am going to end up regretting my decision down the road and wish I had taken more time to explore my options and find a more appealing job.

After close to four years of majoring in mass communication and spending the majority of my life thinking I wanted to be a television anchor, I have realized that is not what I want in life. The thought of having no direction of where I want to go after graduation is frightening.

I worked all throughout high school and college to make it in the television world and now I have no desire for it. I find it extremely unappealing. I just finished an internship at a local television station here in Sioux City, and by the end of it I noticed that I was only interested in one thing… editing video. What am I supposed to do in life with editing video?

As this fall semester comes to an end, I have spoken with many adults in their 40’s and 50’s, who have all asked me what I am going to do when I graduate. I reply saying, “To be honest, I have no idea.” They look at me and say, “Oh don’t worry, I’m *insert age* and I still have no idea what I want to do,” or “You will figure it out! You are only 21, you are so young!” That made me realize that it is normal for someone as young as me to not know what they want to do in life.

So don’t be worried about not knowing what you want to do; you will figure it out. Just worry about getting good grades, having fun with your friends, and finishing college. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be doing internships and building up your resume; just don’t stress too much about your future. You are only in your 20’s once, so have fun and enjoy college.
