Mass Comm Student Finds Strength through Yoga

IMG_8585By Hannah Severson– Senior Jianna Hoss is a Mass Communication student here at Morningside. But, when she isn’t doing work for the mass communications department, you are more than likely going to find her teaching yoga.

Hoss became interested with yoga after taking a personal fitness course in high school. She really got into it, though, her freshman year of college.

“I started with Youtube videos and stuff at home and then I eventually graduated to going to a studio practice,” said Hoss.  This summer, she became a certified yoga instructor.

The most challenging part of yoga training for her was the transformation mentally. “I was warned ahead of time that it was going to be really hard and that it was going to change me in ways that I didn’t even anticipate, “ Hoss said, “It really makes you look at your life. It is more than just the physical practice.”

Hoss goes on to say that she recommends yoga for pretty much anything. It builds strength and flexibilty but it also can help people with things going on in their lives. It also allows people to let go of things that hold them back.

“It is really good for spirituality, relaxation, dealing with anxiety, and really just overcoming a lot of stressful stuff in your life,” she said. “It gives you an outlet to put that into.”

She teaches between three to six classes a week here in Sioux City and back in her hometown of Spirit Lake, Iowa.

There is no skill level required to take one of Jianna’s classes, she teaches all levels. There are options for those who are just beginners, those who are more advanced, and anyone in between.

If you are interested, classes are Monday at 5:30 pm and Wednesday and Friday at 12 pm in the HPER dance room. If you have any questions email Jianna at jkh008@morningside.edu .
