College Brings Back Marching Program

By Amber Burg–The Mustang football team is no longer the only group making the crowd erupt in excitement on Saturdays.

The Marching Mustangs have marched onto the field and into the hearts of Mustang fans.  It’s been over two decades since the college has had a marching band, and the fans and students have missed it

The band, decked out in their new maroon, grey and black uniforms, marched out on to the green turf at halftime of the Morningside vs. Dordt football game September 20. They gave just a preview of their show that night; the whole performance will occur at the Homecoming football game October 2 at 1:30 pm.

Jake Hecht, freshman saxophonist, said, “The uniforms are amazing. They do a really good job of making us all look uniform. And the mirrors are pretty cool.”

The uniforms have a triangle shaped mirror that attaches by Velcro to create the center of the ‘M’ on the left side of their chest.

“I think the new uniforms look really cool,” said Zach Schroeder, junior quint-tom player. “And they help us look really flashy. I think people are going to be really happy with our performance Saturday.”

Hecht felt that their first performance of the year went very well. “We still have a lot to work on but I’m looking forward to doing it.”

The band practices on Bass Field three days a week in the late afternoons for over two hours. Besides the group practice, each musical section practices together once a week.

While being in the band is a big time commitment, most members would say it is the time and effort. For them, coming to college and being a part of the band family has been a wonderful experience. Many of the band members had marched in high school and were ready to have another round of marching and take it to the next level.

“I was very excited that they were creating a marching band,” says Hecht. “It was why I came here.”

Schroeder, an upperclassman, was also eager to hear that the college was bringing marching back.

“I was ecstatic,” said Schroeder, “Marching was one of my favorite aspects of band, and I was excited to see it coming back to Morningside.”

The Marching Mustangs will perform at the halftime of Homecoming and at the rest of the home football games this season.
