Introducing the Mustang Color Guard

colorguardBy Katie Copple–Morningside College is starting a new organization for the 2014-2015 school year: the Mustang Color Guard.

Performing with the marching band at all of the home football games, the Mustang Color Guard will add color and visual detail to each performance.

“We intend to be very progressive and innovative-performing unique, creative, and entertaining shows,” marching band director Shane Macklin said. “Color guard is a priority for us to help present those shows and bring them to life along with the wind and percussion instruments.”

With 50-60 students in the band, Macklin hopes to have at least ten members in the color guard, making the 2014 program double the size of last years M.O.B. “Within 3-5 years, I hope to grow the program to include 100 winds and percussion with 20-24 guard members.  That will be a great size for our college,” Macklin said.

So what exactly is Color Guard? Color guard is an integral part of the visual marching band performance.  In addition to presenting movement on the field with the drill, the color guard uses various props and bright colors to characterize the show.

“Color guard does a great deal to visually display the ideas and concepts of our show.  It involves using various pieces of equipment (flags, prop rifles and sabers) and body movement/dance,” Macklin added.

With years of experience behind him, Macklin hopes to make the Mustang Color Guard one of the best new programs on campus.

Auditions start this week and run until May 10. Auditions will be Tuesday, April 29, from 3-5:30pm but you can also send in a video audition of you performing the routine as well.

Not interested in Color Guard but still want to be involved? MOB has openings for winds and percussion players as well. They are also looking for students with keyboard (piano, synth, mallet) experience, as well as, bass guitar and electric guitar.
