4x400 hand off Eric Koithan to Mark Abrams

By Cassie Burnside–The Mustangs opened their outdoor track and field season on Saturday, April 6, at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa.

One of the first events of the day was the steeplechase.  Morningside received two victories in this event:  Nicole Ausborn and Mark Abrams.  Ausborn finished with a time of 12:19.57 and Abrams with a time of 10:07.04.

It was Abrams’ first time competing in this race.  It was also his first time ever jumping over a water barrier.  Abrams said, “I was super nervous at first, but after the second and third water barrier jump, I started to get the hang of it.”

Morningside also received another victory in the 100 meter dash.  Brian Szekely, a junior transfer from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, won with a time of 11.27 seconds.

No athletes received automatic qualifying marks for nationals, but there were some provisional standards met.  The Mustangs will compete this coming weekend,  Friday and Saturday, at the Sioux City Relays.
