Mingling with ‘cheeseheads’

A view at the early tailgaters

It had been a month since the Green Bay Packers hosted a home game. The last weekend in October took care of that though. The Packers took on the Jacksonville Jaguars on October 28, which had to have been one of the coldest days in October this year.

My family and I went to the game together. We lined up to go in the stadium around 10 a.m. Looking back through the parking lot of Lambeau Field, tailgaters filled the lot with their cheering, cooking, drinking alcohol, and waiting for the gates to open as well.

Once inside the stadium, being rather early in the morning still, the sun had not raised enough over the walls of the stadium to keep fans warm. I stood in the shade with my sister for another hour and a half before the sun came out.  Through that hour and a half, I tried being as tough as I could.  The crisp air on my face and hands forced me to quickly put more layers of clothes on. This was my first time ever having to wear so many layers at an NFL game, and I’ve been to more than a handful of games.

Starting kickoff

When we made it our seats, which were in the sun, I finally started to warm up.  After getting situated in our seats, the announcer introduced the Green Bay Packers and Lambeau went crazy. Fans were screaming for their favorite players.  When the Jacksonville Jaguars were announced, they were booed.

Lambeau Field is a friendly stadium compared to others.  So booing at the opposing team isn’t looked at as unsportsman like. At this game, there were not many Jaguar fans around. At games in the past, I’ve sat next to fans from the opposing team and most Packers fans are genuine to them. The only exception is the few drunks that get carried away at times when the opposing team isn’t doing so well.

Through the game, the weather warmed up and the Packers were playing decent football.  The first half had a few touchdowns by the Packers and both sides of the ball were looking good. So at halftime, the crowd seemed to be pleased with the performance they were getting.

Because October is “Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” at halftime breast cancer survivors came out on the field and a special dance, called the healing dance, was performed. The survivors spread out big pink ribbons and at the end of the performance dozens of doves were released.

Second half began and the Packers started with the ball. With the home team starting with the ball, it revitalized the crowd.  The further into the game it got, a little more intoxicated the fans became. By the third quarter, the smell of beer just hovered in the air.

It’s a tradition at Lambeau Field to player certain songs and have guessing games on the jumbo tron, as I’m sure it is at many stadiums.  One of the guessing games is how many people were in attendance at the game. A total of 70, 464 fans were present to cheer their team on.

My family being four of the 70,464 fans in attendance, each had a different and unique experience of our own.  With the Packers taking the victory, it helped with the enjoyment of the game a little more.

From one true Packers fan that enjoyed this game there is only one thing left to say. Go Pack Go!
