Interested in May Term? Check out this year’s travel destinations

By Paige Potter–
If you would like to get out of the country for a couple of weeks and don’t have anything going May 12 through May 26, 2013, you should check out one of the nine traveling May Terms Morningside is offering next year.

The trips include England, Ireland, and Wales with Gail Dooley, China with LuAnn Haase, England with Marty Knepper, Puerto Rico with Patrick McKinlay and Lilian Lopez, Costa Rica with Rachel Robson, Hawaii with Kurt Spearing, the US Southwest with Thom Swanke, Budapest with Dolie Thompson, and Australia and New Zealand with Molly Williams.

All nine of the May Terms are set to go, but they need early student commitment. Susan Burns, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, said that if not enough students sign up she will decide in mid to late October to cut the trips or say for sure whether they are a go.

Most of the initial deposits for the trips are due September or October. However, if a student decided in November they want to go on one of the May Terms and there are still seats open, if they can make up the payments, the college will allow them to go.  Registration for the trips usually isn’t required until January.

May Term travel was added to the curriculum because the college believes it helps fulfill the part of the mission statement that talks about life long learning.  May Terms don’t only help students understand the importance of life long learning, teachers learn as well.  Some professors who go on these trips have never been to that country before; others have and want to expand their experience to their students.

Whether it’s your first time getting the chance to travel abroad or you have done it before, Morningside’s May Term program has many opportunities that you can check out.  If you have further questions you can contact one of the professors listed above and find out about any additional meetings they will be having.
