Sigs stand against breast cancer

By Claire De Roin–

The music blared as Tom Chilton and two of his fraternity brothers stood on a large box in front of the Olsen Student Center 1 a.m. Saturday morning.

Chilton is doing his part to raise money for the 4th Annual Stand Against Breast Cancer fundraiser.  During this event, from the start to finish of homecoming week, one or more members of the Sigs fraternity could be found standing on the box in front of Olsen at all hours of the day.

“It feels good knowing how much money we’re raising while having fun. We raise a ton of money for a good cause,” Chilton said from on top of the box.

“Every organization does their part to raise money,” he continued, “but I think our group is the most dedicated and committed to philanthropy on campus.”

Fraternity members each take turns spending four-hour shifts on top of the box. The worst part about having a late-night shift, according to Chilton, isn’t the fatigue. “No one is around to talk to,” he said. “We had an X-box out here earlier in the week at night, but the wind earlier this week ripped our tent up. So much for that idea.”

Earlier in the week, Michael Fischer, junior, and Dr. Greg Guelcher, faculty advisor, were manning the box during lunch on a weekday.

“It hasn’t been boring yet!” Fischer said happily. “People have been by to play football, Frisbee.  People keep coming by to buy t-shirts.”

Dr. Guelcher was crouching on the box, grading a stack of papers. “Someone must be standing at all times,” he mentioned as he looked up for a moment. “I’m still on my feet, so this counts,” he said with a laugh.

All donations and t-shirt sale proceeds went to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
