Breath Like the Fish Do

Science Article!

Jour – Science

You could be the little mermaid or at least visit her, even have Aquaman consider you to be his sidekick, or party with Spongebob.

A group of scientists have created crystals that make breathing underwater a reality. These “Aquaman Crystals” not only help you live out underwater dreams these could be a major help to lung cancer patients to help sustain regular breathing levels.

Scientists have figured out how to pack a room’s worth of oxygen into a bucket full of crystals. Unlike other substances that also react to oxygen, they’re likening it to a sponge that can absorb and hold oxygen.

A few grains of the crystal can almost be compared to an oxygen tank and will contain enough oxygen for one breath. The material will absorb oxygen from the water around the diver and supply the diver with it.

Like having very few crystals to breathe underwater, the lung cancer patients would be able to breathe on land and the crystals will take oxygen from the surrounding air. With that they will be able to go free without their oxygen tank and instead have it switched out with a handful of crystals.

It’s the dreams and fantasies of swimming with Ariel, fighting with Aquaman, or meeting Spongebob that make scientific advancement cool and oftentimes useful for medicine and human development.

The Shitty Part to Fame

News Article!

I’m not sure if this is much of a thing anymore, but when it first started it seemed like a big deal. Alex from Target, he was just a normal kid who some girls found attractive and now he is an internet sensation. He was normal and he still is, its just luck that all this happened to him.

Honestly, i thought it was really cool for all of this to blow up for him. What person doesn’t want to be famous for absolutely nothing? It was fun reading articles and watching him on Ellen, he seems pretty chill and doesn’t seem changed by it. The only really shitty part about it is, I forget. I forget about the part where celebrities don’t get their personal space and that they are honestly just people like you and me. The article reminded me of that.

The article started off with how Alex would start any other day and mentions how he had his phone turned off while he was at work during the time he was becoming famous. Then it talks about his thoughts on the whole situation and how his life has changed, listing the number of twitter changes and then how he was offered several different interviews.

Then it went into the shitty part of being famous, the haters. Their was a company that wanted to claim Alex saying that he and his family were working with them, but they had never even heard of the company. It was a mess that was solved, but although it was solved it talks about how much hate the poor guy gets. Getting more love then hate, it also shares how he puts up with it. Concluding with an ‘at the end of the day’ sort of thing, he’s just a kid and he is still just Alex. He will continue to work at Target, forget to take out the trash, and continue waking up at 7 to go to school.

I liked the way the article was set up. It had background at the beginning for those who did not know Alex or about Alex from Target. Then it goes into the details of his fame and what had some from it, both negative and positive. Then it wraps up with a down-to-earth sort of form. Staying true to Alex just because of his new-found fame doesn’t mean he has changed or should act any different.

Much good article.

Much wow.

Change Your Point of View

“Go some place familiar at an unfamiliar time. See the place from a different perspective than the one you’re familiar with. What’s different about the place? What’s the same? Different people or the same ol’ crowd?”

Home.

Home is where the heart is.

Home is where you are safe.

Home is where you can always go without feeling judged.

Home is not with my family.

For this assignment, I went back to my old house. The house I moved into when I went into the seventh grade. After that I was forced to call this place home for the next seven years, until of recently. A story for another time, but I went there for this assignment and I didn’t miss it.

I went there right after class at a time that I would never go home when I lived there. So, it fit the requirements of the assignment. Going inside, everything was different. The house was quiet and had an aura of peacefulness. Something that never existed there before that moment, it made me think that maybe things were finally getting better. Once I remembered where I was though, the thought of a peaceful and serene home quickly faded.

No matter what, the picture or thought of this place and what it has done to me stays the same. It’s an evil place. It may look like a good place to be, but no matter what happens here I will be miserable. No one was there, so I knew I knew I would be okay. Not saying my life is at risk by any means, because it’s not. I would just rather not be there. So, going back there today, I learned that no matter what time of day the moment I step in there, I’m no longer happy.

Brothers on Court

Brothers on Court

Profile Story!~

The frame of the story is a column off to the side of the paper. The two people, Drew and Alex Paulsen, framed within the story, i feel, should be thought of highly or at least looked at for being likeable people for making it onto homecoming court.

As a reader, I thought that it was very nice that both boys made it onto homecoming court. Must be very nice boys and knowing that homecoming court is just a popularity contest, people must really like them. Then at the ending, the article said who had won, Spencer Eiseman and Allison Kjar, and then thought ‘Oh not as popular as I thought they are.’

That sounds kinda rude, but I still think that its pretty cool that they both ended up on court!

Visually, its their pictures at the top of the short article with their names underneath. The photos show us who they are and right under it is the story that explains the article title. It’s their picture, they are the subject, and then it goes into detail. Simply put~1383617_10203875207338217_3309340617334653215_n

Sensory Article

Choosing an ice cream bar, how could you not be excited?! You can hear the anticipation and the wrappers cringing while everyone is waiting to open their bars. Its loud when we can finally open the wrapper. The plastic squeaks against each other, but once the wrapper is open the feeling is satisfying.

Ice cream is always nice even if its not a hot summer day. Going back to a time when things were simple, when your only worry was getting the fun ice cream with nuts then the boring vanilla. Its exciting! The chocolate snapping, the warm ice cream inside. It’s melty, but not too much, but just so it melts away in your mouth. Eating the ice cream is like breathing air. That’s how fast it was gone.

‘Anaconda’ as a Ballad

News Article!

So! The title of the title of the article: ‘Bet You Never Expected to Hear Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” Sung as a Ballad’ is a bit long. Doesn’t really grab someone’s attention at first. The reason i clicked this article was because of the end Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda as a Ballad. It also said it was going to be covered by Mariana’s Trench, who i basically love and knowing how they sound i wasn’t really sure how the cover was going to be.

The cover was really nice! Josh Ramsay, singer and guitarist, really stuck to the Mariana’s Trench sound instead of forming to Anaconda. Which a cover is all about, some would disagree, but in my opinion a cover is about taking a loved song and putting your own twist on it. Which is what he did. He made a ‘degrading’ rap song beautiful and slow.

I have seen this article around multiple times. A part of believes that they all say the same thing, but how many variations of the same thing can you say before it gets old and done. Its a music article, so its quick simple and too the point. Nothing more.

So…in the end i believe the only thing we could really tweek would be the title of the article.

A good night’s sleep never comes easy. That’s why most sleep experts recommend good sleep hygiene. Sleep hygiene is where you practice the same routine every night and when you wake up. A good night’s sleep means having good sleep hygiene. You can get 12 hours of sleep, which is highly unrecommended, and still be tired. Simply because all that sleep will mean nothing without good sleep hygiene.

According to the National Sleep Foundation here are a few things to keep in mind when practicing sleep hygiene:

  • Avoid naps during the day
  • Don’t drink alcohol or coffee before bed
  • Don’t try to go to bed if you aren’t tired
  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time

Those are just a few of the main points when it comes to getting good sleep hygiene. No one has the same routine or way they get to bed, so just because something works for someone means that it will work for you. A good night’s sleep never came easy, but doesn’t mean that they are impossible to come by.

Moving onto campus news, just last week Morningside’s Campus was made into a setting for the walking dead. The philosophy club put together a fundraiser for the last week of October that went until midnight on October 31st, called Humans vs. Zombies. A game of tag where the zombies go and tag the humans, infecting the campus.

May the last human survive win.

The main rules were that your armband must always be showing, the zombies could not run, humans could not be tagged inside the buildings, and outside players could not interfere. A detailed way to play the game is in the media link below.

The Philosophy Club had this fundraiser so that they may be able to go on a conference for sometime next spring. Having already asked for an allocation amount from student government, this is just for them to have some cushion. Unsure if this event will be going on next year, but we can all say that this time around was a very successful event.

Last bit of exciting news,  there were no daytime classes Tuesday, November 4th due to Freshman Registration. All night classes resumed as scheduled though.

Let’s hear what some people did with their short day-off.

Tyler Figge a 5th year at Morningside College:

Not only was it Freshman Registration Day it is also voting day. From 7am-9pm in the Lobby of Eppley Auditorium is where you can place your votes for Iowa, MSide.

That was Tuesday. Hope everyone had a great day and remember to always, keep moving forward.
