Sioux City Native Helps with Motion Picture

Sioux City, IA – Morningside College grad, Leah Winter, is helping a documentary make it to the big screen. According to KTIV,  Finding Noah, which premiered on Thursday, tracks a group of men who traveled through Turkey in search of Noah’s Ark.

in an interview with KCAU, Winter said, “I requested specifically to bring it back to Sioux City so that my friends and family could come and enjoy it with me.”

Winter was promoted to co-producer of the documentary, with over 650 theaters screening the film.

Newell-Fonda Students Help the Hungry

Middle and High school students at Newell-Fonda schools volunteered to help the hungry. Staff and students packed 50,000 meals for those in need according to KTIV.  The event occurred on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

The community provided the supplies for the students to fill the meals.

Harrisburg Shooting

(Canton, SD)— The male student who shot Harrisburg principal, Kevin Lein Wednesday morning, has been recently charged in adult court.

Mason T. Buhl, a sixteen year old from Sioux Falls, will face charges of attempted murder and commission of a felony with a firearm. Buhl has up to twenty-five years in prison or a $50,000 fine according to Argus Leader.

“This was an event that was stopped, and it was stopped by some heroic actions. That’s what we want to focus on here today.” Lincoln County State’s Attorney Tom Wollman stated.

Judge Bradley Zell set a no bond for Buhl for the sake of his safety and safety of the public. Buhl’s hearing is set for October 13.

USS Sioux City

A new combat ship is due to launch in December and it will be christened the USS Sioux City. According to the Sioux City Journal, the Littoral ship will be first tested and then placed in the Navy’s ranks. It has taken two years of construction and 715 million dollars to complete the Sioux City.

On Monday, the commander and crew of the Sioux City attended the Chamber of Commerce dinner, reported KTIV. They unveiled the ship’s crest, that feature local landmarks like the Floyd Monument as well as the colors of Iowa’s flag.

USD on Alert

The University of South Dakota is on alert while two sexual assault investigations take place. The alleged assaults took place late Sunday night and early Monday morning. The Vermillion Police have three persons of interest, none of which are USD students. KTIV-TV

KELO-TV reports, students were notified by the university of the incidents via text message and email. USD freshman Madelin Klamm and Emily Dreeszen shared their thoughts on the incident with KSFY-TV.

USD President Tony W. Abbott doesn’t want panic on campus but wants to ensure student safety is maintained according to the Argus Leader.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges or arrest have been made. KCAU-TV

I-29 Construction Well Behind Schedule

(Sioux City, IA) – Siouxland drivers will have to wait a year longer than expected for construction on I-29 to be completed, according to KMEG 14.

When constructed started in 2008, it was expected to take ten years to finish the ten mile stretch of interstate. However, the projected completion date is now December of 2019.

“In order for that to happen, all our projects that we have going now and into the future have to get completed on time so we can do that next year’s work,” says
Iowa DOT District Transportation Planner Dakin Schultz.

Because construction may carry on during the winter months, some parts of I-29 may become one-way for traffic.

Car Chase in Morningside

(Sioux City, IA) — Early Thursday morning, a car chase with a stolen vehicle ended with a crash, an on foot pursuit, and an arrest. Jordan Gonzalez writes in the Sioux City Journal that Forrest Orestes Lepe of Sioux City allegedly stole a car with a female passenger in morningside. The theft turned into a police chase at  around 7:15 that morning, near Glenn Avenue and South Olive Street. KMEG. Lepe crashed the car around the 1800 block of South Palmetto Street, leading to an on-foot pursuit. Authorities apprehended Lepe near Laurel Avenue and South Olive Street. KCAU. Charges have been pressed, but no court date has been set, yet.

End of a Break-Up

(Odebolt, IA) – A man was found shot in the upper leg on his parent’s kitchen floor late Saturday night in Odebolt, IA

It is being speculated that 29-year-old Mitchell Lee Sorensen was angry from a recent break-up and shot himself in the leg with a shotgun, as according to KCCI.

Authorities have reported that Sorensen entered his parent’s home, took a shotgun and fired one round outside in the air, and then returned back to the kitchen where he shot himself in the leg, as descripted at Siouxland News.

Sorensen was flown to Mercy Hospital in Sioux City, IA as reported by KTIV. Charges are possible for this self-shooting.

Counterfeit Money Found in Siouxland

A fake $20 has made it’s way into Siouxland and police are trying to crack down on any more. According to KMEG, a 16-year-old boy tried to use the fake $20 at a convenience store Tuesday night in South Sioux City, but was not arrested.

North Sioux City officials are also warning the community to be on the look out for counterfeits as well. They warn to always take the time to check money and to call police over any suspicious activity.
