Police hand-helds linked to cancer

Yesterday, the Iowa Highway patrol ordered ban of hand-held radar guns in Des Moines, Iowa. Concerns of cancer from long-term radiation exposure initiated this precaution.

According to spokesman Adam Berluti “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution unit more is known about the issue. The whole situation is under review.”

This is the first movement in it’s kind by a state police agency. Three officers in Cedar Rapids filed workman’s compensation claims saying they developed cancer from these hand-held guns two months ago.

The ban affects 70 radar guns that will be taken out of service. State troopers can still have a radar unit, only it will mounted on the outside of their vehicles.

Studies are being conducted into the possible links of the guns to cancer.
