“I always dreamt of being a mom,” and a great mom she turned out to be. Kristi Waller is a mother, grandmother, wife, and a friend.  She works everyday but has time to make everyone in her family knows she is thinking of them and loves them.  She did not have the easiest childhood, but it made her a strong woman today.

Kristi learned her family values from her mother.  Eloise, Kristi’s mother, attached herself to her children after her husband died in a tragic farming accident.  The accident happened when Kristi was 11 years old.  Growing up without a father is a hard task for any child.

“I wish I had a male figure in my life when I was growing up,” says Kristi.  Eloise was a great mother to Kristi and her siblings, but something was always missing.  Eloise did not handle the loss well and relied on her children very much to fill the empty spaces in her life.  The family stuck together through every sad moment and every happy moment and became a stronger family unit because they knew Wendell would want them to be happy. “My mom tried her best to fill all the voids we had growing up without a father figure.”

Kristi’s family lived in a small rural town called Holstein, Iowa.  She went to nursing school in Iowa City and then returned home to marry the love of her life Steve Waller.  She met Steve in school and they fell in love and got married at the age of 21.  “He had the same values as me, family first,” was how Kristi described how she knew Steve was her one and only.

In their 35 years of marriage they have been blessed with four children and now three grandchildren. “My life revolves around my children and going to see them at any chance possible.”  Her family may be spread all over Iowa and Nebraska, but distance does not stop Kristi. “I make sure to see my grandchildren at least once a month.”

Kristi knew she wanted a family once she was married.  “I wanted a large family, 13 kids, a family full of laugher and happiness.”  She had a hard life as a child and did not want her children to miss out on any things families should do together.  Her family time was full of a lot of sadness and she wanted her kids to have everything that a family should have.  Kristi and Steve took vacations with the family all through the kids’ younger years.  Every holiday was spent together and every birthday was a huge celebration.

Stephanie, Kristi’s oldest daughter, says “My mother is a strong woman. She is so family-oriented and I hope to carry on her values into my own family.”

“My wife is the reason my family is so great.  She gave me four amazing children and I hope she knows how much we all love her,” says Steve.  “Kristi is hard working. She tries to put a smile on everyone’s face.” “She knows what to say to someone to make them feel better.  She went through sadness and she knows how to help people get through anything.”

Kristi works hard to make sure her family is happy.  She would not trade anything for family time because to her, “Family is first.”

Monday afternoon a man was shoved onto the subway track in NYC and was killed after being struck by a subway.  Witnesses say the victim and another man were arguing before the accident took place. Videos were taken of the accident and turned into the police.  Other witnesses said the victim tried to climb back up but was still struck by the subway.  The man was taken to the hospital and was later pronounced dead.

This story is newsworthy because it does not happen often.  Many people use the subway systems but not many accidents ever occur.  It can be traumatizing for the witnesses that watched this man’s death and some people may second guess bringing kids in areas where things like this could happen.  It may bring up another concern about how safe subway systems are.  People may want safety barriers put up so accidents like this do not happen again.

Pediatricians are saying emergency contraception should be more widely available for girls and women.  The FDA says it should be available to any woman who needs it without a prescription.  Now federal policy says girls under 17 need a prescription to ge the pill.  AAP says girls need the contraception and we should make it easy for them to get.  If it is easy for them to get and they have knowledge about it then they are more likely to use it and lower the teen birth rate.

This is newsworthy because teen pregnancy is everywhere and the rate is going up.  These girls are not ready for babies and having access to the emergency contraception may make the number decline.  I think doctors should be talking to the women, telling them about the pill and how to protect them self from an unwanted pregnancy.  Parents will want to read this article too, because parents are always concerned about their children, and this could affect many people if this is passed.

It seems like investigators have overlooked a crucial piece of evidence in the Casey Anthony case. On the day of the death someone has searched “fool proof suffocation'”  They had searched Casey’s Internet Explorer, but ignored her Mozilla Foxfire browser where the search was done.  The prosecutors claimed she was killed from chloroform, which was found Casey’s search engine history.

This is interesting for people everywhere.  This case was all over the news as it was happening. Everyone has heard of this case, and many people have very strong feelings on what happened.  People will want to read this because it was such a crazy case, and to find more information out after the case has been closed will anger some people.  It seems to be a very simple thing that investigators should have known to check, so it may make people aware of things that may have been skipped in other cases or aware of things to check in cases happening now.

Football Broadcast

Here is my three final broadcast stories.

People find gift cards to be great gifts, but they aren’t realizing the hidden fees that could be coming with those gifts.  Money seems to be the best gift you can give.  Cards purchased from Visa or things like it have fees that can be charged right when purchasing.  Along with those, after a year they could possibly tack on a monthly fee for every month it isn’t used. The best thing to do is buy a gift card directly from the store, or go to a website that can give you a discount on the card you purchase.

Read the story here.

This is newsworthy because the holidays are coming up and people don’t like their money being messed with. People will want the most for their money, and don’t want to be hit with a fee they didn’t realize could happen.  I guarantee that many people think a Visa card would be better because it can be used anywhere, but they will be the one to get you in the end. Also, it is newsworthy because at the end it mentions a few websites that can give cash for practically a discounted price.  People will love to hear that news!

The expected precipitation this winter is boosting hopes for farmers. The farmer’s almanac says the Midwest will have a usual winter.  Temperatures may swing quite a bit, but snowfall will be average for this area.

The summer’s drought hurt farmers this year.  The high temperatures and very little rainfall affected farmers all through the Midwest.  (Quote) The Iowa Weather Blog reported Sioux City receiving 2.79 inches of rain between June 1 and July 15. The average for that time period is 5.6 inches. (Quote) This is said to not affect the weather this winter though. (Quote)

With the average snowfall being 34.8 inches for Sioux City, farmers can keep their heads up for the next crop season.

Loans are haunting students everywhere. The major question here is: Is four years of college worth being 20 years in debt?

Students in college are working to earn a degree to make a living once they have graduated college.  This is a difficult situation because the job market is increasingly competitive. A student must start paying back loans 6 months after graduation.  (Quote)

The average cost in 2011 for a four year institution was $22,000 per year. Those numbers can scare any student away from trying to achieve a degree. (Quote)

Morningside College is trying to help students as much as possible. They offer award packages to students depending on their year at the college, their financial aid package, and grades.  (Quote)

Do not let the numbers scare you away from receiving the degree.

Crime rates dropped for days after the storm.  Burglaries though increased.  Rates on murder, rape, robbery, and assault all dropped around 30 percent.  They believe the rates dropped due to police spread everywhere in the city for days after the storm.  The presence of police are in places that they usually aren’t found causing them to catch some people in the act.

Read the story here.

This is newsworthy because people everywhere are still talking and wanting to know more about the storm and damage that was done. People want to know about crime rates to know where it is safe to be or live. This is also newsworthy because people may realize that having cops more spread out, that crime can be stopped.  This may make cities hire more cops to stop crime and keep people more safe. It could help people realize the importance of cops being everywhere.

Adderall Broadcast

Adderall being given to children for problems in school, has caused much fury.  Psychology Today says children are being medicated too early.  Psychologists say proper analysis is not being done. Children who are not achieving in school are being given medication in hope to be cured.

Psychologists say there is a check list to go through before agreeing to medication.  A physical and psychological check up is needed.  Check into family and school environments for safety.

After those tests are done give your child the proper help. In some cases medication may truly be needed.  Once this is done the child’s behavior should improve.
