Crime falls in NYC after Sandy

Crime rates dropped for days after the storm.  Burglaries though increased.  Rates on murder, rape, robbery, and assault all dropped around 30 percent.  They believe the rates dropped due to police spread everywhere in the city for days after the storm.  The presence of police are in places that they usually aren’t found causing them to catch some people in the act.

Read the story here.

This is newsworthy because people everywhere are still talking and wanting to know more about the storm and damage that was done. People want to know about crime rates to know where it is safe to be or live. This is also newsworthy because people may realize that having cops more spread out, that crime can be stopped.  This may make cities hire more cops to stop crime and keep people more safe. It could help people realize the importance of cops being everywhere.

An interesting question: did the storm cause a drop in crime, or is it something else? Other crimes — price gouging, battery, looting — have increased while more violent crimes have dropped. Maybe people are taking their anger out in other ways.
