Christopher Petts is a freshman at Morningside if you see him around campus, however if you get to know him you will find out that he is much more than that. He already has a foot in the door when it comes to his future career. A career he hopes is going to be in the music industry.

He has his own music album on Spotify, he plays the trumpet, French horn, baritone, bass guitar, trap set percussion, and he is able to make music on his computer. He also has a very introvert personality, for example he doesn’t go out at night and prefers to lay in bed.

His father is a pastor which lead to many moves in his life. That is not a problem for him as he had music to help him cope. However, he does have some set backs when it comes to having a religious family, for example he wasn’t allowed to listen to any kind of music other than Christian music. His brother was listened to country music while at college, and his parents found out and took the radio out of his car. He discovered he was good at music at the end of 10th grade, when he realized that he was good at band and understood music. Over the following summer he began making music and started doing as much music related activities in school as possible, whether that as band, choir, or a music theory class.

When he heard different music for the first time at school he fell in love and decided to learn more about it and found out he was good at it. He then decided that it made sense for him to try and make music.

He gets his inspiration in random spirts throughout his days, in particular when he is bored. His surroundings in particular his song “Depths of the Rain” was inspired by the sounds of hearing rain downpour on the roof of his house. This sound sparked the melody of the song and represents the feeling and mood he felt at that time during the flash flood. He also pulls inspiration from life experiences, for example he tried starting a band in high school and showed his band mates the process of making a song and the intro of that song came from his feelings in that moment.

He already has released “illusion” on Spotify consisting of 10 songs. When asked about the meaning of this name he said it is because he feels like most people who are artists hid themselves behind some pop music and don’t want their fans to see the real them.

When asking other people about Petts’s music they say that it isn’t necessarily their go to music however it is something will listen to and don’t mind his music. However, it is also a shared thought process that Petts wouldn’t be Petts without his music and that as a way to let some of his feelings out.

His parents who are very strict have heard his music. While they do not enjoy anything other than Christian music, he says that they are okay with his music overall as it is just instrumental music and does not do anything they wish didn’t happen. Some of those things are swearing, sexual lyrics, and it wasn’t against scripture. They do support him and his music making skills, so long as he stays within those guidelines.

His music is similar to two musicians, Adam Young and the Jelly Rox . Adam Young is the man known as Owl City, The Jelly Rox, which is a one-man project by performed by Matt Langston. These two men influence Petts’s music because they are the first two big artists that he listened to when he first discovered music, and broke out of his parents’ bubble. He really liked how they used instrumentation and lyricism. He really enjoyed how they make a story into music, for example he named off Owl Citys older hits Hello Seattle, Good Times, and Fireflies.

Petts roommate Eric Wells he said that one big thing about Petts is that he is always laying on his bed considering more opportunities for his music, thinking of new ideas for songs and listening to inspiration. Another one of his friends is Dalton Van Briesen who also mentions how big music is in Petts life saying that “Petts is one of the coolest guys I know, on top of his abilities in the musical realm. It is definitely the coolest thing he does and one of the best things about him.”

In the future he hopes to release a new album with new songs. He is always trying to buy new gear and new setups. He hopes in the future to be in a music studio, and helping create songs and produce them. He really wants to help other musicians for as long as he possibly can. He hopes to be a songwriter for Hollywood. He doesn’t care if he is going to be a well known writer or a ghost writer, he just wants to make music people will enjoy. He explains that he would like to be more of a Studio DJ when he finds a career rather than being a Live DJ. He explains that difference as he doesn’t want to be the personality on a radio station, he wants to be the guy that writes the music for the radio stations.

He has his own music album on Spotify, he plays many instruments and has a very introvert personality. He grew up in many different places, as his family was constantly moving. He first grew up in Newel, South Dakota and Freeman, South Dakota before moving lastly to Yankton, South Dakota where he finally graduated high school. He didn’t have to deal with the stress of moving and adjusting to a new town and a new school and new friends alone however, as he has two sisters and a brother who he could confide with when things took to much. You may wonder why he moves so much and that is because his father is a pastor, which means he moved where ever the church needed him to be. However he does have some set backs when it comes to having a religious family, for example he wasn’t allowed to listen to any kind of music other than christian music, so when he heard different music at school he fell in love and decided to learn more about it and found out he was good at it. Coach Steve Ryan is aware of the football protests occurring across the country.

Coach Ryan is the head football coach at Morningside College, and when asked about what he would do if a player on his team did decide to protest he responded, “I would talk to them about it and why they feel the need to protest and make a statement, I would want as a member of the team to know why you feel you need to make the statement.”

His team is currently in the locker room for the anthem, not giving his players a chance to protest. He stated “that is more of a timing situation” and if the team came to him wanting to be out there for the anthem he is willing to allow them to be out there.

The handbook says ‘The involvement of student-athletes in any incidents which may bring dishonor to them will also dishonor their team and Morningside College. Such involvement is unacceptable and will not be tolerated’ applies to this situation he responded “I don’t believe that is the intent of the phrase, however it is broad enough that it can be applied in the situation. However I think it does go back to the mentality of being in third grade and standing for the pledge of allegiance.”

He also said that he did have a meeting with his players before the year began that included a talk about possible protests. He couldn’t comment on what was said in the meeting.

While there have been protests around the area, most recently Buena Vista University, he said that he doesn’t believe protesting will be an issue for the team. He said part of growing up is questioning why you do certain things and that sometimes leads to protesting.

He also has said that if a player approached him before a game saying they would like to go out and protest he would not allow them to do so on a spur of the moment decision, however if the team as a whole wanted to be out for the national anthem he would allow that.

North Korea’s missile testing has the world on edge and has led to a meeting with the United Nations.
One attack being discussed is an attack on Guam and if this were to happen whether the United Nations would respond peacefully or militaristically.
As reported by BBC News, the General Secretary of NATO is Jens Stoltenberg said, “What I will say is that we are now totally focused on how can we contribute to a peaceful solution of the conflict and press North Korea to stop its nuclear missile programs.”
There are attempts to scare North Korea into ending their nuclear programs by way of sanctions, China has already cut back drastically in the amount of coal that they buy from North Korea which is one of their major exports.
Another possible sanction being discussed at The United Nations is whether to sanction how much fuel North Korea is able to buy. According to The New York Times, the Trump Administration said, “[The United States] is warning that North Korea is “begging for war,” is pressing China and other members of the United Nations Security Council to cut off all oil and other fuels to the country.”
The leader in this push is The United States of America, however there are two United Nations leading countries pushing back who are China and Russia. If this vote where to pass on Monday, September 11, 2017 it will be harshest sanction ever passed by The United Nations. The vote is to cut 90% of the fuel available for purchase by North Korea, this however could cause a possible rift between China, who is North Korea’s biggest trading partner. Inside the White House, there is little desire that the drive to cut off North Korea’s fuel — which echoes a similar ban that the United States used to endeavor to urge Japan to change its behavior in 1941, preceding the assault on Pearl Harbor — will work in view of the Chinese hesitance to make that stride.

As reported by CNN, the vote came back as passing unanimously. The sanctions imposed were to cap North Korea’s oil imports, ban textile exports, end additional overseas laborer contracts, suppress smuggling efforts, stop joint ventures with other nations and sanction designated North Korean government entities, according to a US official familiar with negotiations.
Russia doesn’t trust sanctions are working, and President Vladimir Putin fears that cutting of the oil supply could hurt the North Korean citizens. Beijing and Moscow have asked for a stop that would end North Korean atomic rocket tests in return for the U.S. also, South Korea stopping their customary joint military activities, an idea the Trump organization rejected. Trump announced that North Korea would not be allowed shoot off its I.C.B.M.’s. — “It won’t occur!” he tweeted on Jan. 2 — and they were let go. He said the United States would bring “shoot and rage” toward the North in the event that it was undermined, and Sunday’s atomic test, asserted by the North to be a nuclear bomb, was joined by North Korea’s declaration that the weapon could be fitted on a rocket that could achieve the United States.

With North Korea’s recent missile testing the whole world has been looking for a way to contain the growing insecurity of a nuclear war. After two separate nuclear tests this month alone, the United Nations has convened a meeting to impose sanctions and determine how to respond to a possible attack.

One such scenario being discussed is about a possible attack on Guam, which is a territory of the United States, which holds a key military base in the Pacific. The part of the agreement is that being discussed is whether the attack on a territory of a country and not the actual country constitutes the assembling of the alliance against the attacking country, in this case North Korea. The General Secretary of NATO is Jens Stoltenberg said, “What I will say is that we are now totally focused on how can we contribute to a peaceful solution of the conflict and press North Korea to stop its nuclear missile programs.”
