Kate Middleton is Pregnant

Posted by: Lindsay | December 4, 2012 | 1 Comment |

Kate Middleton is pregnant. The article is very newsworthy because people are genuinely interested in her and her husband’s life. Also, the new baby could someday hold the future of England in it’s hands. I like how the article includes the royal reactions to the news. I also like how the article includes the baby rumors leading up to the final confirmation. However, I didn’t like the lack of explanation and feelings about the news from the royal couple. Overall, it is great news!

Teen girls give classmates pee-infused cupcakes

Posted by: Lindsay | November 28, 2012 | 1 Comment |

Teen girls pee in cupcake batter, and hand them out to people they don’t like. The article is newsworthy because of the rarity. Although rare, it was rather disgusting. Also, people in the community should know about the event. The article has no trouble getting to the point, and providing adult and student opinions, which I like. The article should include the punishment of the girls, and a comment from school administration. Next time you are offered a cupcake, you might want to politely decline.

The article is informative and written very well.

3 broadcast stories final

I’m Lindsay Martin reporting for Morningside news.

Morningside’s meal plan pricing has upset students who want more for their money.

Kylie Kneifl, a nursing student at Morningside, said, “It irritates me that I pay $9.00 for supper and only eat a cold sandwich.”

Morningside College offers four different meal plans each ringing in at a little over 1800 dollars.

Students want to pay for each meal individually. Shiran Nathaniel, general manager of Sodexo, said, “We would never be able to cover costs if students pay for each meal individually.”

Nancy Seeman, a junior at Morningside, said, “Students, myself included, think they are only paying for the meal. We forget about all the other items that factor into the cost.”

Any changes to pricing will have to wait until next year.

Months of hard work could pay off for the Morningside dance team.

The Morningside College dance team will perform at the Iowa State dance team competition in Des Moines on November 30th.

Last year the girls took home second place in hip-hop and third in pom. This year, the team competes in the hip-hop, pom, and jazz divisions

The team will compete against other private colleges.

Lexi Busch, a sophomore dance team member, said, “We are looking forward to competing in all three divisions at state. Hopefully, our hard work brings us home some trophies. ”

The team practices every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Aside from the upcoming state competition, the squad performs at football and basketball halftimes at Morningside, local high school halftimes, and surrounding competitions.

The hard work will hopefully pay off, when the team travels to Minneapolis in February to compete at nationals.

Morningside students are lending a hand to stop child hunger.

Food 4 Kids, created by St. James United Methodist Church, provides pre-packaged food bags. Whittier Elementary students receive the bags the last Friday of every month.

Food 4 Kids would like to deliver food bags every Friday to Whittier students by January. Their next goal would be to include five other needy elementary schools in Sioux City.

Katie Weis, a sophomore at Morningside, said, “I think the food bags are a great idea, and it feels great to help those in need so close to home.”

Students who would like to participate can bring food items to their residence halls. They can also purchase a bag at any Sodexo location. Food 4 Kids welcomes donations.

Make a change in Siouxland and donate today.

UPS Halts Boy Scout Donations Over Anti-Gay Policy

Posted by: Lindsay | November 13, 2012 | 1 Comment |

The Boy Scouts of America will no longer receive donations from UPS because of BSA anti-gay policy. The story is newsworthy because of proximity, prominence, and impact. The article does a great job of showing why UPS cut funding; however, there could be more information about BSA’s reaction to the decision. I think this is related to the recent election and the legalization of gay marriage in some states. The article also does a great job of active voice, and leaving out “be” verbs.

Morningside’s meal plan pricing has upset students who want more for their money.

Kylie Kneifl, a nursing student at Morningside, said, “It irritates me that I pay $9.00 for supper and only eat a cold sandwich.”

Morningside College offers four different meal plans each ringing in at $1860.

Shiran Nathaniel, general manager of Sodexo, gave insight into the factors that make up the meal plan. Sodexo only receives a portion of the money students’ pay for each meal plan. Sodexo comes up with a number factoring in participation, food costs, employee pay, etc. then gives that number to the business office where they factor in maintenance and other costs. Finally, a definite number is decided for the meal plans.

Students want to pay for each meal individually. However according to Nathaniel, that is not an option. He said, “We would never be able to cover costs if students pay for each meal individually.”

Nancy Seeman, a junior at Morningside, said, “Students, myself included, think they are only paying for the meal. We forget about all the other items that factor into the costs.”

Asking more for their money may not be an option for Morningside students.

Businesses Hired 158,000 Workers In October

Posted by: Lindsay | November 1, 2012 | 1 Comment |

Construction, transportation and utilities, financial activities, and services all showed growth in ADP October jobs. This article is especially meaningful for me as a college student who will be needing a job soon. The article is timely, and many people in this economy would be interested to read about the increase or decrease in specific job fields. I wish they would say specific jobs rather than just the fields that increased. I also liked how they included the one field that lost jobs (manufacturing). Also, the article only includes jobs in the private sector, so it excludes government jobs. Overall I found the article interesting!

You can now have your cake and eat it too, without worrying about the calories. According to Psychology Today, calories are not the only nutritional value you should be looking at. Calories alone cannot make a food healthy or unhealthy.

Avocados, sardines, and walnuts are all high-calorie foods that are very healthy.

Essential nutrients, proportion of fats, inflammatory and glycemic effect, all play a role in whether or not a food is considered healthy.

Substituting ingredients is an alternative option to making unhealthy foods healthy. Eating a piece of chocolate cake is not so bad after all.
