Tuesday Tutoring Tip for March 9, 2010
March 9th, 2010
Carefully consider constructions containing clauses connected by commas; this kind of creation can commonly be considered contraband or criminal. The comma splice is a notoriously frequent error. Avoid comma splices by using a semicolon instead of a comma after an independent clause like “Betty spent the afternoon on the golf course; the kids were at camp.” The two clauses must be connected enough to each other to justify being in the same sentence. The example above is ok; “Hamlet is playing at the local theatre; Jane was just in time to return books to the library” is not. Here, the two clauses don’t belong in the same sentence. The semicolon should be a period, and the remainder of the words turned into a separate sentence.

Alas, assembling all right as alright at times appears all right; although always avoiding alright altogether actually attains accuracy. This error is so widespread that it is even commonly accepted in informal communications, but, in formal English writing, alright is wrong. The one-word spelling probably originated as an attempt to parallel altogether and already. The difference is, those two words have meanings distinct from the meanings of their two-word counterparts; when people use alright, there is no other meaning than all right.

Maybe mettle is manufactured; my marvelous metal mending machine meddled with many men’s mogul medals. The four italicized words sound alike, but have very different meanings. People prove their mettle, usually in combat or a sporting event, by displaying great strength, courage, or stamina. To meddle is to interfere. Medals are won in the Olympics, among other places, and are usually made out of the metals gold, silver, or bronze.

Interesting article from The New Yorker
February 8th, 2010
George Packer talks about being Neither Luddite nor Biltonite with respect to new media and technology. Luddite, being one who shuns all technology while Biltonite is a Packer-created neologism (inspired by Nick Bilton of the New York Times) referring to those who is enthusiastic about all technological change. His article brings up interesting questions about the idea of change for change sake and the importance of critical evaluation of all technologies, new and old alike.

Library or Learning Center
February 5th, 2010
What is that in the middle of campus? Is it a Library or a Learning Center? Last year a marketing survey revealed that many people on campus are confused. The recommendation: ‘brand’ recognition would be enhanced by abandoning the label ‘learning center’ and instead re-embracing the term ‘library’. But the term ‘learning center’ was adopted in 2006 when tutors and the coffee shop were added to the library.
The name confusion indicates substantive issues. On the surface, it is tempting to resolve matters with simple convenience- let’s just use whatever is easier to say or remember. Deeper, it is tempting to debate the accuracy of terminology- what does the dictionary say? But neither convenience nor language accuracy will solve our need for a powerful brand.
How can we best communicate to our patrons what we are? Do patrons know that we are focused on developing life-long learners? Do our patrons know that providing expertise is more important to us than providing books? Do we identify ourselves primarily with other ‘libraries’ or with our role here on campus?
I favor using the term ‘learning center’ to include all the services we provide to aid the learning enterprise: tutors, professional staff, librarians, books, databases, computers, and specialized learning spaces. To me, a strong library is a necessary part of a learning center. But to cultivate life-long learning as part of a developmental program is a specialized mission that sets us apart.
The name confusion is a call for us to better describe what we do.
Please tell me what you think by clicking on the comment feature below…
Thanks,
Andy Heiser

Although the audio is acceptable, avoid arbitrary application of all ready and already in any academic activity, article, or argument. Already pertains to a timeframe. Josephine already has Super Bowl tickets. All ready is a two-word phrase meaning completely prepared. Despite already having Super Bowl tickets, Josephine is pretty far from being all ready for her trip to Miami for Super Sunday.

Tuesday Tutoring Tip for January 26, 2010
February 3rd, 2010
Traffic tragedy triggers terribly tardy Tuesday Tutoring Tip. This writer was involved in a minor car accident (no one hurt) Tuesday, which delayed the release of this email. This late tip involves three words that sound alike, but are often confused: assure, ensure, and insure. If you assure a person of something, you make him or her more confident of it. Some students need a little assurance before getting up in front of the class and giving a speech. Usually, ensure refers to some action that makes certain that something else happens. The recent victory by Scott Brown in the Massachusetts Senatorial race ensures that, provided they are unified, the Republicans will be able to sustain a filibuster against proposed legislation on the Senate floor. Lastly, insure involves issuing or purchasing an insurance policy. I insured the package I sent to my brother for ten times its actual value.
