NY cabbie calls for death of Jews.

Today on foxnews.com the top story is a New York City bicycle cabbie who is Muslim and on his website, RevolutionMuslim.com, posted a “prayer” calling for the murder of Jews. Authorities say nothing can be done about the cabbie or his website because technically the things he wrote on his blog are not a threat but a prayer, thus he is protected by the First Amendment.
The website has been monitored since 2006 and has five to ten active followers. Even though he claims this is just a prayer, many fear what type of influence this website could have on other Muslims. The cabbie said he created RevolutionMuslim.com with the mission of “preserving Islamic culture.”
This story gets me thinking about what the Founding Fathers really meant when they decided on our freedoms. Did they know that people would come to this country and threaten other groups of people? Could they have known that Freedom of Speech could actually be twisted and turned so that it works in favor of those who want to do harm? I have a hard time believing that that is what they wanted at all. This also makes me question if we have too much Freedom? I’m not saying we need to monitor speech so close everyone becomes paranoid, I ‘m just thinking that we might take advantage of our Freedoms and stretch them so they fit our agenda.

Good questions, Kacie. The Founding Fathers had experience with radicals and you might be surprised at the kinds of speech–spoken and written–they were familiar with. In general I suspect their position was more speech is better than less speech. One of the functions of free speech is as a pressure vavlve. Think how much angrier this guy would be if he wasn’t allowed to say what he wanted.
