Draft of Paper #1

“Wasted Youth”

College students all over the country, past and present, have always had one thing in common, the need for alcohol. The drinking problem is nothing new but the concern however, is growing.

Many students feel overwhelmed when getting to college, the stress of classes, possibly a job, if they are involved in a sport, they have to figure out how to balance all of their time. Naturally, when the weekend arrives they need to relieve some of that stress and it is seen that they turn to alcohol to do such.

Administrators and school boards, in some cases, are thought to shy away from the issue. Drinking in college is a “right of passage” and students are going to do it so action should only be taken when necessary. “Under any circumstances acceptance by administrators, trustees, professors and parents of this college culture of alcohol and other drug abuse is inexcusable, said Joseph Califano in the article, College Drinking, Drug Use grows more Extreme.

Administrators, parents, and most of all the students should take into consideration the facts that are being presented. For example these alcohol related consequences for college students between the ages of 18-24:

*1,700 die each year from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, including motor vehicle crashes.

*599,000 are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol.

*More than 97,000 are victims of alcohol-related sexual assault or date rape.

*400,000 have unprotected sex and more than 100,000 report having been too intoxicated to know if they consented to having sex.

*More than 150,000 develop an alcohol-related health problem.

The author of ‘College Drinking: Reframing a Social Problem’ says “Colleges sometimes pigeonhole the dangerous use of alcohol as purely a student affairs issue or a problem for a small number of individual students. They simply don’t frame it as a major college-wide problem.” “When alcohol-related problems happen, like a student death, colleges sometimes would rather “dodge a bullet” by trying to tamp down media coverage instead of viewing the incident as a teachable moment.”

College students all across America should realize the danger they put themselves in every time they drink excessively. They shouldn’t think they are invincible and it can’t happen to me, because it can and it will. Parents also need to be involved with their children’s lives, because they can say all they want to about drinking but actions speak louder than words.

The cost of drinking is more than a monetary issue; it is about what your life may be like. It may be difficult if you see that “everyone is doing it” but be an individual, think for yourself, and know the consequences of both sides of the issue before you decide.

I like the topic of the article and the facts backing it up. I also agree with the argument that drinking, in college or anywhere is STUPID!
