Obama College Affordability Plan

This article from the New York Times talks about President Obama’s plan to promote college affordability on his trip to Michigan. Obama will be visiting a community college and unveil his $60 billion plan  which would make community college free for qualified students. He said that “every American-no matter where they grew up or how much money their parents have-deserves a quality education and a shot at success, then we can build a future as remarkable as our past”.

The article is very newsworthy because it is coming from the President which affects every U.S. citizen. It especially would affect lower income, college aged students. The writer does a good job of starting off with a solid lead as he talks about Obama’s presidency coming to an end, along with trying to face a Republican Congress which is in no mood to cooperate. The article is just previewing what Obama plans so it would be interesting to hear how the event goes and how his trip to Michigan is accepted. The article somewhat suggests that his idea is not likely to pass. This is not the best job of objectivity even if it is realistic.

Presidential Candidate Ben Carson

This article had an effective lead that did draw me in and intrigued me to read more. The article discussed Ben Carson’s uncommon path to success recently in the presidential campaign. It started by evaluating the extreme differences between Carson and fellow Republican candidate Donald Trump. They are nearly complete opposites in personality. Trump is flamboyant, loud, and has no filter, whereas Carson takes the opposite approach of humble, quiet, and “nice”. The article suggests that people are noticing and appreciating this attitude of Carson as he has gained momentum in the race.

This story is absolutely newsworthy because it is relevant to anybody interested in the Presidential race. This might be somewhat more attractive to Republican Party members, but Democrats pay close attention to the entire race as well. If I were to do anything differently I would not focus as much attention to Trump and try to compare Carson to other candidates that are also in the race. Overall a well-written article that captured my attention.

Today I interviewed Zach Schoenecker. Zach is a 19 year old Mass Comm/ New Media Production Major from Belle Plaine, Minnesota. He spends significant time with KMSC as he is the operations director and student engineer. He drives a 1996 Buick Park Avenue, but he recently picked up a 1959 Edsel Ranger that he is currently restoring. Zach also works with MCTV. He does not watch much television, but his favorite show is Criminal Minds. When he is not a student here at Morningisde, he works as a package handler at Fed Ex here in town. Mr. Schoenecker enjoys school and his favorite class this semester is Web Design. When I asked him what his favorite weather season was he quickly told me winter because he loves snow.

Objectivity

What is your definition of objectivity?

Objectivity is neutral coverage on hard news. It is relaying information without any type of bias or favoritism. Being objective is important because your news needs to be attractive to all kinds of viewers. If you show bias your credibility as a news reporter is lost. If you show favoritism people will not trust that you are reporting the truth. A good way of avoiding objectivity is to make sure to not use adjectives to describe a situation. Report the truth and only the truth. Make sure to keep all inner opinions to yourself.
